Well my best mate has just come up with a "cracking idea" as he calls it, I'm not so sure. A old london W reg taxi TX1 i think,as a family car. He just took one in part exchange for a Ifor Williams trailer. His thinking is to get a LHD seat and put in in the front for the wife, remove the parting glass. His wee boy has motor neurons disease and needs a wheel chair and see this is the ideal fun family hack. Like i say not convinced at all. Are they not thirsty buggers even though its a diesel. Cant see it being too much "FUN" to drive ether. Anyone had any experience with this type of lunacy before.

I keep trying to convince my girlfriend it's a good idea when I get her knocked up. You could fit loads of bikes in one.

Does the one he's looking at have ramps and clamps for the wheelchair? Some of them do, not sure how much it would cost to get them fitted if it doesn't.

They do about 35mpg, but the old Nissan engines should last forever and you can run them on veg oil.

my dad had one, as hes a taxi driver. he said it was very uncomfortable, cost a lot to maintain and did less than 20mpg.

yes bit of mixed results on the MPG front, anywhere between 20-35. He stays in a village on outskirts of Glasgow and does mix of city and duel carriageways.

You will have a bunch of old ones coming cheap for sale somewhere along this year, as TFL is limiting the age of black cabs to 15 years.

Might be interesting to get a old one, and refurb the hell out of it!

If it was cheap enough, why not? Worst case scenario, annoys the st out of him, and he moves on to the next bright idea.... smile

Horrible things, noisy, slow, terrible ride, I used to have to take them every day for work. Far better in my opinion to get a proper MPV. If I remember correctly Autocar (or another mag) tested drove the newest one and it was very uncomfortable to drive.

Buy one if you need to be a taxi-driver in London (only that and the bloody Vito thing can be used) AVOID if not!
