IIRC AA you need to wait 72 hours from joining on the phone or online.

RAC allow you to do it instantly.

Did was an RAC member but didnt have the right cover when the car broke down. So he paid there and then & the RAC man sorted the car.

what's the point in joining and then renewing every year, if you can just join when the car breaks down ?

( serious question, as this is exactly what i did )

It's a lot cheaper to pay in advance than at the side of the road broken down, they've rather got you by the short hairs at that point and they know it...

From my experience i would allow at least a week for the RAC to even find you. Shambles .

joining this way cost around the same as three years' discounted continuous cover
( and i've been without cover for a lot more than three years )

for a 200 mile tow home, then 50 miles to the garage at my convenience, it looked like value thumbup

You will find that all the recovery services will require at least 24 hours membership before you can use ALL the benefits of the recovery (in fact I believe that only the big 3 will let you join roadside, and they won't do it if it's a very busy night/day)
You can get basic recovery for around £30, with extra for full recovery/ at home etc. From most of the motoring organisations.
If you join at the roadside, they will charge you around £140 (I do say AROUND, so don't quote me!)for BASIC recovery only.
Basic recovery means that a patrol will attend and attempt a repair, and /or they will tow your vehicle up to a MAXIMUM of 10 miles, not to home if it's further (officially)

An RAC signer-upper-er tried to get me to join while I was minding my own business in a mall. According to him, I could use it within 24 hours.

so if my basic recovery ( from a big three ) got me 200 miles home, then 50 miles to a mechanic at my convenience, what extra benefits would i have got by waiting an extra 24 hours ???

Not sure about the RAC. I joined and got the call out straight away, but they charged me £140 for their basic annual package instead of about £30 or whatever it is. The 72 hour thing is true of RAC then in my experience. This was about 8 months ago.
