I'd have thought that this would be ideal when attending to emergencies in this kind of weather?

It takes much to convince PHers of the benefits of winter tyres, let alone a public service governed by strict budget contraints.

Anyone know for sure?

Furthermore, what about the AA or RAC? Do they have winter tyres on their trucks?

Edit to add: apologies for the typo for 'ambulances'. If a mod could correct, that would be appreciated.

Generally no. Some specialist units may have. It's all about cost and effectiveness apparently.

Not sure about Ambo.

I've noticed the police cars in Leeds have them except for the little Corsa's which don't for some reason. Ambulances just seem to be using the same van tyres as they always do.

There was an article in our local rag (Nottingham Evening Post) stating that East Midlands Ambulance service vehicles had all been fitted with winter tyres.

However, as that paper is so utterly dire I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that this was incorrect!

none at my nick have and with the snow on saturday we were limited as to where we could do. It was not helped by the council not gritting untill after midnight!!! Luckly i had a shovel with me so we could dig ourselves out a couple of times. Also non of the ambulance vehicles had either going by the speed that they were doing.

I'd guess not for Ambulances in Leicestershire. On our little white laneing tour yesterday, my off road friends and I helped pull an ambulance up a hill to get to an elderly lady who needed treatment (they said they were not allowed to carry a chair from ambulance to door in the snow). It turns out she was fine, so we stood around until the ambulance was out again. smile

There's a Paramadic guy round the corner from me with a Meganne estate thing. Saw him outside his house in the snow fitting snowsocks on the front & rear wheels yesterday. The main road 400yards away was clear.

I drove past (its a hill) in a rwd car on snowies no bother at all.

Supposedly professional drivers eh rofl

Can mods please delete posts that regurgitate the ambiwlans joke.

Back on topic, the "amubulances" round my my have had winter tyres fitted although that appears to have been a futile gesture so far with no snow at all since November when they were put on.

RAC man who helped me out last year had winter tyres and also chains. Still needed a tow by a 4x4 after helping me though.

A few years ago I went past* an ambulance which had slid on the light snow and was in a ditch, so I'd say not...............

  • I did stop to make sure they were ok and they said they were fine and that another ambulance was on the way to the emergency.

Ambulances up here (highland) don't use winter tyres, but there are suitable vehicles available if needed to access some difficult areas. Drivers are spot on even in wintry conditions.
