scrapping a car

I've got a old saab 9-5 which is developing a gearbox problem so not worth fixing. How do i go about scrapping it just drive it to nearest scrap yard with log book?
Also whats s reg 9-5 worth? everything works, climate, heated seats etc.

At the suggestion of another PHer (Sorry, can't remember their name) I tried Cartakeback.com

They've been runnning ads on various channels for a while. Got a quote for an old (Mot expired) Ibiza of £175. Accepted the quote online, and they phoned to arrange a collection time. Fully expected to get the webuyanycar treatment and get knocked down on the price for feeble excuses. It's red, it's got 4 wheels, etc etc

Bloke from a scrappy 3 miles away turned up, filled in yellow part of V5. Gave me £175 cash, hooked it to his wagon and drove off. Hour later got the email for "Certificate of destruction"

They've amazed an old cynic!

Give them a whirl IMO

That may have been me, I've used that same company a few times and they've always given me a decent price. There's no commitment until you want to, so worth a look. You may even get more if they come to collect it.

I like to recommend Cartakeback where relevant too. Got a good price, piece of piss to arrange, lovely.

Stick it on ebay with no reserve, you will get more than scrap value

A PH'r may take it off your hands for just over scrap money as a cheap smoker warts and all.

5th gear is notchy and reverse is hard to find and clunks into gear, everything else works but bodyworks scratched, Mot'd for 11 months though!

Another vote for cartakeback, used them a few times, they pay the best price I can get without sticking it on eBay.

I'd stick it on Ebay myself. Seems a shame to scrap it just because 5th and Reverse doesn't work very well when the rest of the car works perfectly.

Another thought what about an auction? May be a little selfish to pass it onto another innocent motorist when it has gearbox issues but that's the risk you take when buying from an auction.

Ebay all the way - plenty of scrap dealers on there and they are competing with banger racers and DIYers.

No one test drives until they've won it and then they'll back out.

I clearly list all faults that they would see / find when they viewed / drove it.

Anything with 11 MOT is worth at least £400 IMO.

If you were 350 miles nearer i'd have offered £300 for it, sight unseen!

I'd just keep using it till it breaks, will save you money on deprecation on any replacement, plus the scrap value will still be the same as it is now.
