Do you have a full licence yet? If so for how long?
If you are sub 20 and it's your first car and you are new to driving, I'd personally say don't spank £6k on a what will likely be a dull car. Spend £1k, and save the £5k. Then in 10-12 months upgrade using the saved money to something worthwhile.
Classics and kits offer the best insurance prices, but you'll need to phone a few places up and not rely on comparison websites.
If you must look at newer, then look at less obvious candidates, anything tinny, small and hatchback like will arse rape you in terms of insurance premiums. Instead try looking at bigger saloon cars, Mondeo and Audi A6 and up. You'll either find cheaper insurance or much nicer/faster cars for the same money as a crappy Corsa/Ibiza/Fiesta type of car.

Well insurance for a 17year old fully comp I'm not getting any quote lower then 4k no matter what I try k off. I know it's steep nowadays, but if you do it right, £200 PCM on insurance is your max. That's if you go big, and go monthly.
