For 10-11k, can you really do better than a MkV Golf GTi?

Important Caveats:
  • I have a partner with a little girl am back on the shelf, alone, have no-one, so 2 seaters are out IN.
  • mpg is not a huge consideration, but it is a consideration. Else I'd be looking at Monaros.
  • Sub 7 sec 0-60 is a must.
They are a reasonable size, they are a respectable badge, they have an accceptable level of poke, they are an involving drive, they are built well for their class, their image straddles both youth and respectability and I cant seem to find much in the way of inherent problems. And they dont lose their value terribly.

I have been saying for a couple of years now that I really didnt want to jump on the "Gotta have a Golf" bandwagon. But the more thought I give it, the more I find them to be the obvious and inevitable choice.

Edited to reflect new situation. Luckily, I didnt cave to the ex's demands at the time....

There are a few I would pick before a Golf GTi, but they are a good looking and well equipped car that I would be happy to own.

So yes and no!

Clearly, if a car has the capability to accelerate quickly, obviously you couldn't carry children in it for fear of killing them to death.

ludicrous speed

We have a 4 door 2005 GTI (pic in my profile). Wife uses it mainly and it's a great all rounder so I'd recommend one. Golfs do seem to attract a bit of negativity on PH from some posters but what car doesn't I suppose!

This^^ everybody knows kids spontaneously combust if you do 0-60 in less that 7 seconds

BMW 130i!

I am a bit of a fanboy, but they really are superb cars. £10-£11k would get you a very nice one, too.

Late '06 and 40,000-50,000 miles.

Enough in the budget to then get a LSD installed and maybe a set of non-runflat tyres and maybe some new rear springs and dampers.

Am I being blind? All I can see is the OP say 2 seaters are out.

Do they really have an "involving" drive?? Mate ran one for a few years with approx 300bhp. i thought it was a bit numb. Very good, but numb.

Correct.

and E46 M3? Really? I am the last person in the world who needs sellng on the merits of an M3, but for two things: it needs to be an '05 or later and; the servicing is eye-watering. Especially on a leggy one. E46 M3 (in Silverstone Blue) would be my first choice if the budget was more like 15-15k and I had enough spare cash to cover one service and one potential fault each year. Which I dont.
