Time for Tea? A snow-covered 'Ring

Single-seater fun in some very inclement conditions

Question: what do you do when your world-famous race track is out of action for normal activities due to a liberal covering of snow and temperatures of -16C?

Which way to the Andros trophy?
Which way to the Andros trophy?
The answer, in the case of the Nurburgring, is to plonk Andy Gulden, Chief Instructor of the Nurburgring Driving Academy, into a Nurburgring Formula racer, strap on a few GoPros and let him loose.

Curse you weather and your unpredictability too - our man Dale Lomas was hoping for something similar but we got our car before the snow arrived. Not that we're sore losers or anything.

Ps - Muchos thanks to Alex Kruszynski (@GrimDownSouth) for tweeting us in the direction of this little gem

Bet that was fun.

Holding oversteer in a single seater is very impressive.

On the game PGR4 you have the chance to take a old Maserati 250F on a snow covered Nordschleife, i believe the target is a lap in 9min 30seconds, quite challenging to say the least...

I've been driven round the Red Bull Ring/Österreichring in a 4x4 SUV in 5 inches of snow at can say it's pretty weird not being able to see the apexes or gravel traps. Bloody good fun though! smile

Someone's been at the tyres with the cutter looking at the first bit of the film.

That looks so much fun. I wouldn't be able to make it out the pit lane I don't think, he's got some serious skills!

That looks to be so much fun. It's a shame they didn't picture him his lid off, I am am sure he must have been grinning from ear to ear.

I'm sure there's a video of the same guy in the same car, doing a lap of the 'Ring in the rain. Impressive to say the least - he makes it around the carousel by mostly turning right.

Will watch the snow lap when I regain access to youtube, but going on the rain lap, it's bound to be awesome.

So what are the Nurburgring Formula racers and what wheel do they normally run? The first shots of the car 1.13 show a nice centre lock wheel later on i.e. 1.48 they have swapped to a 5 spoke alloy. Having said that it's mighty impressive what ever wheel.

Is it just me picturing an F1 winter series? Massa and Hamilton with optional bumpers?

Looks like a Formula BMW?

The wheels at the beginning and end are racing wheels with intermediate racing tyres.

For actually driving on track they used some normal alloys that fit with winter tyres on.

You can see the complete lack of grip difference on the racing set.
