Range Rover prototype

I was near the land-rover factory in Solihull yesterday and saw (as in quite normal in these areas) a range rover mule/prototype. It was fairly obvious due to the gaffer tape/extra vents and odd parts (also a left hand drive.

Now being a car geek i thought it would take a couple of pictures to show my dad, after taking a couple of pictures the driver got out and approached me. He asked me to stop taking pictures and told me it wasnt allowed. Just wondering what peoples general thought on this were?

But have some courtesy. Have a look at whatever it was and move on. By taking pics you'll be forcing the guy to stop his work and move on, just let him get on with it!

i was travelling up the A90 from Dunblane to Perth around 2 years ago and found myself driving behind a 4 car convoy of full fat Range Rover mules...obviously going into the highlands for some road/offroad testing as I was tailing them, the rear suspension collapsed and the car careered towards the side of the road to eventually come to a standstill...

I actually managed to take pics as this was undoubtedly the 2013 RR mule, but I never got around to emailing Autocar. Surprising they would allow a car with such a potentially catastrophic weakness to roadtest on public roads though.

JLR definitely would not have released the car onto the road if there was any suspicion of any sort of weakness, either in the design process or in the testing process that takes place off of public roads.

Car manufacturers (JLR in particular actually) test their cars to absolute destruction, and if they're anything like us the cars would be thoroughly safety checked before they're allowed out on the road if they've been through anything rigorous. Even our production models are completely spanner checked before they're released onto the road even if they've only done a single lap of the test track.

If you did observe a significant failure, chances are that this would cause the entire fleet of mule cars to be grounded while it was investigated, and the problem sorted with the solution tested to destruction long before the car goes to market.

They've been running these for a wee while between gaydon and Solihull up the back roads, albeit a bit more disguised than that.

At the end of the day, if they don't want people taking pictures of it, disguise it or don't drive it on the road. Simples!
