Hi.
Running this thread on behalf of a friend. He runs a 59 plate Laguna Coupe - (FDSH with 55k miles) Four wheel steering system fitted

The car has gone in for a major service today. The service department have called this afternoon to say that having checked the car, they have identified an issue in that all 4 of the cars tyres are miss-shapen. They have said that all 4 tyres need to be replaced.

This seems a bit odd, in that I would imagine that it would be pretty rare to have a situation where 'all' four tyres were iffy. Likely conclusion to draw is that there is something wrong with the steering/set up on the car. Can anyone offer a possible answer, or indeed, has anyone encountered a similar situation with the late model Laguna's. The dealer is being quite coy, but in stating that the tyres need to be replaced it is evident that they are not willing to offer a fault with the vehicle has being a possible cause.

The car is still in warranty.

Thanks in advance

Misshapen how? If it's excess wear on one edge it does point to an alignment problem, if they've gone the shape of 50p pieces it probably doesn't.

How long ago were the tyres last changed? It sounds like there could be a geometry issue. It's strange they havent said the tyres are worn as that is normally related to geometry/ alignment. Does the car have 4WS?

Being a Renault its more to do with the wheels being buckled, they are terrible quality a bit like the car in General.

My fathers Laguna, had to have his wheels repaired because of this and it is a known issue, although Renault won't tell you that.

When my Father took his wheels in to be repaired the company did say to him that Renault wheels are known to buckle by driving over a fag packet lol.

Tell him to get shot of the car before the warrenty runs out as he will have some very expensive bills to come.

One of the reasons why Renault have stopped making the car for the UK market is that it has such a bad name that people steer clear of them with a barge pole.

Infact tell him just to steer clear of Renault full stop would be the best advice.

Front tyres are close to limit (new on car 12 months ago) - Tyres checked - wear does not appear to be uneven.
Rears have around 4mm of tread

Car does have 4WS

Friend has not been to the dealer yet - all he is going on is that what he has been told - "wheels are not rotating in a true circular motion and have mishapen - they are moving in elliptical motion"

??

It's sh8t like this that will prevent me from ever buying a French car. The wheel has been in existence since i dunno, the dawn of civilisation, but you can rely on those f8ckers to make one that won't stay round!

How did he manage to drive his car to the garage? I'd tell them to leave the 4 tyres alone, elliptical or otherwise, and trade it in at the next opportunity ..

Has he noticed anything odd when driving, vibration and so on ? If not, and they've all worn evenly, then put it down to Renault trying to flog you stuff you might not (yet) need.
No vibration to speak of, but some excess noise at times. Tyre wear is even. (sorry, I am trying to translate what I have been told)

Wheels Buckling?!

All 4 would seem extreme, but my guess is something to do with the set up of the car - which certainly doesn't warrant 4 new tyres. As stated, the dealer is being quite 'non-commital' He is not going to have 4 new tyres put on..... the car is still in warranty, so he is going to insist that it is looked at properly on the basis that it is likely to be an issue with the car.

Thanks for the info - heplful and has given him some ammo to take to Renault.

I have heard of cases of tyres wearing unevenly when doing lots of miles at constant speed. They would get a resonance within the tyre and end up shaped like a 50p piece - it was tyres with big tread blocks such as Goodyears F1's that seemed most susceptible to it. I've not had first hand experience of this but it could be worth investigating maybe.

Are they cheapo tyres? I had an issue with an old Astra I had a while back where all four tyres had to be binned as they were mis-shapen and making a noise a bit like a worn wheel bearing. They were mid-range tyres so I guess it was just a dodgy batch or something?

I have heard of Laguna wheels deforming though, but on the Laguna 2 not 3.

I doubt very much if they would be cheap tyres, its most probably on the originals if the car is an 09, so they should be a good make such as Michelin or pirelli etc, its just a shame the car isn't a good make.

Renault won't be much help even if the evidence is a 100% in your freinds favour, I mean most modern french cars have issues but Renault is the worst of a bad bunch.

Advice Get shot of the car, once the car gets to 3 years old you will be in for a serious headache.

On our car we would come out and get the dreaded stop light come up on the dash only to find out that one or two of the tyres would be flat.

Its typical Renault they can't even get the wheel right let alone the rest of the car.

I own one of these with the 4WS, so watching with interest.

No problems with mine so far in 10k, 42k in total. Wouldn't mis shapen wheels be noticable?

I'd with this - it doesn't happen to all tyres, and tends to affect some brands more than others

Heel and toe wear on the outer tread blocks can happen when driven as described above. The wear does make the tyre look out of shape, and does cause a rumbling sound similar to a knackered wheel bearing

I dare say that something has been lost in translation here. Maybe there is something wrong with the tracking, maybe they have been under/over inflated and have worn incorrectly. So many people don't pay attention to tyres properly and it's nothing to do with the car.

As for Smugglervin's suggestion thet Renaults with buckled wheels is a 'known fault', that's BS. I'd love to see his evidence that proves it.

Even the almight google finds about 3 incidents on the whole of t'interweb where people have reported buckled wheels on their Renaults. And some of those have bounced off kerbs.

The 5th result is this topic FFS rolleyes

My fathers old car and the amount of rims that spit and polish have had to repair for the renault laguna, do you work for Renault customer services. as it sounds like it.

No, But I sell Renaults for a franchised dealer and I know that not a single Renault I have ever sold has been back for buckled wheels...............But obviously, your ONE example of your dads wheels buckling with no context to what kind of driving, where it was driven, how many miles and any other circumstances obviously proves the point eh? rolleyes

Easy boys.....easy.

Appreciate the contributions. I'll see my friend at work this morning - no doubt he will have had a chat with Renault yesterday.

I will update later.

Phone up any Wheel refurbisher and they will tell you the same thing, they are the ones who have to straighten Renaults square wheels.
I was only joking when I said you must work for Renault now the truth has come out, I guess some idiot has to stick up for them.
And mine was NOT a one off, funny thing we have never had this problem before or since getting rid of the Renault Laguna.
The company who straightened our wheels quoted "If its a Laguna you must of run over a fag packet" as it was one of most popular wheels for repair as they are about as soft as French Cheese, and then after that its Merc Brabus wheels and anything with a runflat.

I have seen on the adverts that if you buy a new Renault that you get a 4 year warranty with any new Renault, I guess they are using stronger cable ties or a better quality sticky back plastic.

I wonder what happens when it reaches 4 years 1 day, I guess it turns into a clown car and the wheels drop off lol
