Do you mean the cars terminally break or just need something fixing? Every car needs stuff doing from time to time.

I do wonder when I look back through the costs of owning my BMW Z4M Roadster. Over £4,000 in 4 months in fuel, upgrades, insurance, tax depreciation etc. And this car was used purely for pleasure. What else could I have done with that money? But I did love that car. Nothing better than a warm evening out for a drive in the sunset through the forest.

Find a better mechanic.

Learn to do some work and find faults yourself.

I don't have much luck with cars tbh - breakdowns, accidents, vandalism etc.

Cars are simply unpredictable...

You could go out and buy a brand new car with a 3 year warranty and have nothing but trouble with it, or you could buy something 5 years old with 100k on the clock and run it for several years without a single thing going wrong with it.

If you are looking after your cars properly and they keep 'breaking' regularly then your problem is either of the following:

a)You are actually ill treating your cars without realising it
b)you are really, really unlucky
c)You are buying every really unreliable car that has ever been made...

I understand wear and tear but complete engine replacements or entire braking systems failing after a few months of ownership when MOT and self inspection showed no faults.

Sounds somewhat unlucky. Do you put oil and water in them? I've had 12 cars, I think, about 550K miles total, have had one breakdown and no punctures. The sensors go a lot on the French cars but that's about it. And that's Vauxhall, Renault, Peugeot and Citroen.

Or is that what the OP was already doing? That would explain such a high turnover of cars.

If so, save up a bit / get finance / lease a newer, lower mileage more modern example, pref with a decent warranty.
