Would definitely get an XC90 over a C Max but the S Max is fairly good!

I'll second that, I've got a friend who's got a '61' reg S-Max Titanium X - VERY nice car

I think the XC90 is highly rated by all those 'in the know'. I certainly would be happy with one and nearly had one once. If you should go down the Ford route then, as others have suggested, I would avoid the dreary C-Max and go for the S-Max instead, which is good to drive.

Everyone I know who has an XC90 rates them highly, but mentions the cost of fuel and tyres as being "surprising" (not in a nice way...)

The couple of people I know with S-Max Titaniums also rate them highly and are happy with the running costs...

XC90 and S-Max can't be in the same league for running costs?

Currently I have a BMW 5 series touring, which is v.thirsty to run. The tyres are run flats and they're v.expensive to replace. I reckon an xc 90 is going to cost the same as my BMW to run, but I don't mind that because its a lot more car and I don't do many miles . It's just to go to the shops, take the kids to school and maybe do the odd long journey, but I want a 4x4 because I live in the middle of no where.

You may get around 26-30mpg & tyres should be a lot cheaper. Servicing is every 12 months though, read up on them here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=3... lots of info.

Whats the budget ?

I was reading about a guy who got 67k on a set !! & another on 45k
Also Nokian WR2's seem to be great all year round & 30k + from them.

Q7's I hear are very bad on tyre wear.

I've got a 2004 D5, excellent car, just check the 4 wheel drive works if you buy a 2004 or 2005 model as ours didn't, which was quite embarrassing when I got stuck last year, costs about £600 to fix.

We average 30mpg overall as it's mainly used for short journeys. If it's used for longer journeysit averages about 33mpg, on a long motorway journeys I get 38-40. Obviously it depends how hard you drive it but there not really built for performance although I wish I'd got the newer 185bhp version rather than 163bhp.

Last time I went anywhere near the middle of nowhere it had proper roads & everything.

You seem to be able to get the kids to school etc in your current car, so why the need for a 4x4?

Does this problem still exist on the newer cars or have Volvo aknowledged the issue and uprated the affected parts?

The later ones definately have a different part, Volvo acknowledge the fault and do contribute to the repair, but not enough for it to have been recalled.

We also live in the village, and although we have roads they don't get cleared or gritted, so a 4x4 is useful if you actually need to go anywhere, last year when it snowed my neighbour couldn't get out in her BMW for 4 days.

I've owned an early XC90 for the past 5 years, in that time it's covered 80k miles taking it to 105k miles. I can honestly say that apart from service items it's only need some lower links(?) and bushes.

Tyre wear with Pirelli Scorpions has comparable with any other car I've owned, good tyres do cost but that's the same with any car. As for fuel economy I've seen 40mpg on a run however with mixed driving the fuel computer reports 33mpg.

As with all car forums there will be horror stories but it's important to keep things in perspective.

Car XYZ not having a lot of tales of woe on the internet only tells you that no-one has bothered to find a forum, join up and complain.

From my test drive of them (5 years ago), they are comically underpowered. Be prepared to look well ahead at junctions and roundabouts!!

Or, buy a Touareg 3.0 V6 TDi.

I've just picked up a 1 year old S-Max as our new family car and although it's still early days, both my wife and I are really chuffed with it. My wife and I looked at, and drove, a few different cars, including our friends XC90 and in the end we opted for the S-Max. I don't know if it matters to you but the S-Max was by far the best car of the lot to drive.
We also live out in the sticks, in rural Aberdeenshire, and we cope fine although we do use winter tyres on both our cars, not that we've needed them this year.
