Any and all opinons here gratefully accepted.

Good friend as a K Plate original Cavalier Turbo 4x4 which is used as a daily driver... He wants to take it of the road for a few months and I have offered him my old 93 2.2TiD to have for a bit. He puts the queries in and low and behold with the only option being changed on the policy quote being the car the 93 comes out more expensive to insure!

W .... T and indeed F!!!

Go to a comparison site and try the same quotes as a new customer. They're probably just ripping you off by increasing or maintaining the same premium regardless of what car is being used because you are an existing customer. In fact when you switch back I really wouldn't put it past them to increase it AGAIN :P I've heard some real horror stories about things like that on here.

This was on the two main comparison websites that the results were coming from!

I have been through the policy quotes and there are no additional restrictions on the Cav.. i.e miles, excess, windscreen cover etc... Literally the only difference is the car!

Saab is a much more desirable brand than Vauxhall to most people, and marque makes a HUGE difference for insurers I have noticed. That might be enough to push the Saab's quote up regardless if the Vauxhall has more power or is even a higher insurance group.

More people who own the Saab have claim, statistically making the car a higher risk

Seems very odd a 2.2 oil burner worth £600 would cost 20% more to insure than £3k's worth of 200+BHP group 17 saloon car by any metrics!

Where did you find that info? I'm genuinely curious, all I can find now is ratings on the 50-group scale and for anything remotely classic their rating is "fk you"

The Cav Turbo always was cheap for me to insure. When I sold it 6 years ago for my current diesel, yep, the diesel was more expensive to insure despite being at least 6 groups lower. I think it's down to the number of claims for each model of a car - as they made so few, there were never many claims. I'd have thought they'd have fallen into the hands of hooligans by now, but as most got scrapped for the engine, perhaps not - still no claims!

The chap in question has the info from the Cav Turbo Owners Club of which he is a member.

Yes, it was rated at gp17 to 19 on the old 20 gp system.
