Toyo 4 vs T1R

Hi All

Wondering if anyone has experience of Toyo 4 tyres and maybe the difference between them and T1R? I've used T1R Toyos for years (and the previous T1S) and they've performed extremely well all-round but especially good on small car for summer driving/ handling.

Can't fathom the difference between these two going by descriptions on the web!

I found Proxes 4 to be utterly uses apart from in warm/hot conditions in which they were very grippy.

Useless is the cold and wet.

T1-Rs have soft sidewalls so aren't good on heavy cars or high profile tyred cars that need precise steering.

Other than that they are a great tyre, not great in the cold but great compared to the 4.

I think the Proxy 4 is more of a comfort tyre?

Either way, get the new T1 Sport (not T1S) over the T1R if possible, much better tyre with an asymmetric tread.

T1 Sport = Stiffer side walls than the old T1R's ??

They certainly feel like it, but not seen any info from Toyo saying that. They are much better than the T1R IMO.

That's what you always say......


It depends what car they're going on as to whether the T1R will be appt or not.... had them on my Astra coupe for a while and they were excellent for the money, lasted ages aswell and pretty good in the snow.


Quite a few people run them on Scoobies etc I'd imagine that's on the limit of the weight you'd want to be chucking around on T1R's

For that money, have you thought of Falken FK452's ? I'll be ordering a set of 4 for the S3 £320 delivered form Camskill (225/45/17)

I would have to agree after my first trackday on them I thought they did OK for good value road tyres ....


However get the pressure right and they were 10 times better..... bit of a balancing act though.

pretty happy with the T1R's on my alfa 156 tbh. I wonder if the people who rubbish them have even used them or are just repeating what they have heard elsewhere?

My wife's had no problems in the snow/cold in a Puma on T1Rs. My MX-5 is no worse, and possibly better, on T1-Rs than it was last year on GY Eagle F1s. Oh, and here's a picture of my T16S in the snow a couple of years ago. On T1-Rs



Sure they're not great in the cold, they're summer tyres. They're no worse than any other summer tyres though IMHO.

Yes on a 156 1.8, 147 2.0 and 147 GTA x 2......

but i wasn't talking about you, from your post i assumed you thought they were pretty good for road use but not so much on track.

I like t1r's and rate them much higher than plenty of more expensive tyres.

I have only owned them in xl (extra load) trim though so perhaps they have stiffer sidewalls than normal ones as they dont feel much softer than many other tyres i have had.

I used both on my old Polo GTI. Didn't really notice any difference to be honest, both were crap in the wet

I rate T1Rs quite highly. But would only use them on fairly light cars. Yes the sidewall is quite soft but they seem to grip quite well on the greasy roads of the highlands.
