Special Edition Cars, Where have they gone?

Alright everyone, had a good weekend so far?

Looking at previous sheds and posts made me realise that there are very little special edition cars any more that are considered rather rare. Take the Golf R32 for example, it is a special edition, but not exactly rare. I think it would be good for car makers to make more special edition cars, i think they have a better, more special feeling about them - Not that I have driven any .

Anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? would you like to see more special editions?

I don't think the R32 is a special edition. It's a model in the range. The Golf Rolling Stones was a SE.

Thats almost perfect, i suppose bar lamborghini, they do make quite a few editions of the Gallardo. I was thinking more along the lines of the average car maker though.

Have you seen what MINI has been churning out lately? They're running out of posh London districts to name the cars after.

But, yeah, mechanically modified special editions in the vein of the multitudinous go-faster JDM MX5s of the '90s are a bit scarce...

I think this is true in terms of normal road cars. I love a good special edition!

Not so much these days I don't think though. I've quite fancied a Audi A4 DTM, being fairly limited and fairly quick too:




I think Audi did a limited Le Mans edition of an A6 diesel which didn't look any more special than your standard S-Line as far as I'm aware.

Maybe it's just not worth their while designing special pannels or what have you. But it would be nice to have some more variety on the road.

Actually, now I think of it there are quite a few Special Edition fashion cars as of late...

I guess, thinking about it, there are a fair few. But it doesnt seem like it, i would like a special edition along the lines of the lotus sunbeam, differnt look, and power upgrades. Maybe its just me though.

Bugatti make nothing BUT special editions.... though by special editions its just usually a more hideous colour than anyone has chosen before!

Think most manufacturers use the `special edition` label on model runouts to shift any remaining old, new stock.

Hadn't noticed this, but you're right - maybe there's just less scope for dealers to stick a green pinstripe and cheap wheel trims on a Volkswagen Golf and advertise it as a Golf Caribbean Special Edition.
