I was happily driving down a fairly twisty A road last night, no other traffic about, on my way to a restaurant.

As I rounded a corner, I saw a grit lorry about 50 yards ahead, trundling along slowly, yellow lamps flashing away and grit being flung from it's arse, as you would expect...

I said to my girlfriend 'ah no, we're gonna be stuck behind this for miles now, and possibly be late. But I'm not overtaking it, no way.'

So I resigned myself to a 25mph ride to dinner.

As I got a little closer, the lorry pulled off to a small lay-by, and slowed down, not quite to a stop.

'Oh', thinks I, 'he must be stopping for some reason'...

As I went past, he pulled straight back out and continued to grit.

He had actually pulled in to let me past. I was so impressed, I nearly stopped to get out and thank him. As it was, I flashed the hazard lights to show massive appreciation.

What are the chances of that, eh?! thumbup

Cool starry bra etc.

The highway code requires drivers of slower vehicles to give way to traffic whenever possible (or it did when I passed my test).

That would include everyone from gritters (tho overtaking one and then crashing on ice would be pretty funny!!) to caravan owners

Did you hear that CARAVAN OWNERS

The bin men wouldn't of pulled over, that is for sure. I think they sit in the middle of the road on purpose..

The highway code requires lots of things that most mouth breathers ignore / choose not to bother with.

Couldn't believe that this driver was being so professional and considerate.

I guess things are so bad on the roads these days that this stuck out like a sore thumb to me, when actually it should be the norm!

Good to hear of those wonderful acts of superb driving and consideration! Wish I read more of those....

Last Xmas, I saw a massive Bin lorry or whatever you call them being driven by a retarded twit, was snowing and icy, the driver though he was in Tokyo drift and it was very scary to see that massive lorry reving hard and sliding all over the place! Driver's fault and driver was a tw*t! No argument. END OF.

Driver's fault? Did he actually crash into anything or are you just bemoaning his fun?

Last Christmas I saw a double decker bus drifting on the ice.

With all that torque and the long wheelbase, it must be fun.

PS: The bus was empty and there was loads of room.

Well, sad as it sounds, why not write to the council to thank him/them...... I bet they don't get many people saying nice things to them.

Perhaps the gritter driver knew that there was a particulary icy bit a bit further down the road and thought " I'll let that dhead in a hurry behind me overtake ,then I can give him a cheery wave as I drive by as he's trying to get his car out the ditch"

Ive never driven under the speed limit with the van on the back, infact, on the mway I break the law (shock horror) sitting at 70mph, the van is more stable at that speed!!

I dont get where people get stressed at it!

Of course, if the OP was DParry, he'd be on here saying the gritter let him past, then he crashed on the ungritted road, and now his kneck hurts...

This is indeed very impressive. I always cut the gritters some slack in any case - depending on the weather forecast they only have a few hours to do a route in order to be most effective, I can understand the need to just get on with the job rather than stopping every time someone is behind them.
