As per title, just wondering if I'd be breaking the law doing this? I'm trying to convince my local council to implement some type of traffic-calming measure to reduce the crazy speeds at which a huge number of people drive at down the road I live on, but the council seem completely oblivious to any issues and even stated that due to it being an emergency route, no speed-calming measures would be implemented.

However, the issue of speeding along this road is starting to become quite serious - 5 accidents have taken place outside my house in the past 2 years and many more along the entire length of the road, some quite serious, due to speeding/overtaking and the speeds at which an ever-increasing percentage of drivers travel at are becoming ridiculous.

TIA

The council don't need much of an excuse to lower speed limits or stick more bloody traffic "calming" measures wherever they feel like it, they obviously don't think your road needs them. There is probably a NIMBYism effect happening here, the fact that people are "racing" past your house is probably amplified by the fact that it's right on your door step.

I hate traffic calming measures, people that want them are stupid nymbies and doubtless drive past other peoples houses in the same manner that people are driving past theirs. I've told my council not to spend any more of my money on them.

If people don't like the noise of traffic, perhaps they should move somewhere quieter. We all have places to go.

I think you meant to post this on the Brake forum.

We had a chap move into a house at the side of a NSL main road, then complained about the traffic. The council extended the 30mph limit out to his place, then put a 40 in from there to the NSL about 3/4 of a mile further out of the village.

My own attitude is that people can maybe complain about something that changes after they move in, but if you buy a house knowing it is beside a main road, or there are church bells, or you live in the country so there could be cockerels, you really shouldn't be able to moan about it.

Teach your kids not to walk out in front of cars, be aware that the bit between the rocky stoney bits is called a road and cars drive down it, oh and stop being a stupid idiot.

Seriously, you are actually considering buying a radar gun and videoing cars going past? to achieve what? Suspension breaking speed humps outside your house?

What speeds (in your opinion) are these people driving at that is so "ridiculous"? What speed would you like people to be travelling at past your house?

rolleyes

ETA: no, you are not breaking the law, you can use a radar gun if you wish and you can video anything in a public place! But you will look like a stood at the side of the road with your notebook, video camera and ebay special radar gun!

Ok, soooo.....

One car ends up in my neighbours drive due to 2 tts racing and then spinning when one loses control when overtaking the other; both neighbours opposite me have had cars crash into their walls (3-times for one in the past 3 years) due to taking the corner too quickly; three other crashes that we can't quite figure out how they happened outside our house; having had to call the police on a number of occasions due to cars racing up and down the road (talking 60-70mph) and on 2 occasions it led to arrests; a incident where someone had to be cut from the car just 50-60 yards up from my house due to rolling it taking the bend too quickly and all this in the past couple of years.

If trying to make the place I live safer makes me an 'idiot' or a 'NIMBY', so be it. Just because I mention traffic-calming does that mean speed-humps? Or does your intellect not allow you to look further at, say, narrowing of the the road? Some of you really are a bunch of judgmental half-wits rolleyes

How would narrowing the road slow me down ?

If there is approx 4" either side of the car I'm happy to go through at 60+

People who campaign for traffic calming measures usually then campaign for them to be removed as the sound of cars slowing and then accelerating again is much more noticeable than a car coming past at a constant speed.

You must give me the name and number of your optician. Because he or she's clearly got you some super-powerful perspective-compensating slow-down-time contact lenses or something.

You seriously go through things at over 60 with a genuine 4" either side of your car? I fail to believe that you can even judge that at 60mph, and if you do then you're just waiting to be the next person to crash into his neighbour's front garden. Do you lean a ruler out the window to check or just use your penis as a guide?

Unfortunately, changing a speed limit etc is unlikely to have much impact on that kind of behaviour. That's dangerous driving, not speeding.

4 inches is the same at 0mph as 60mph.

It is. However at 60mph you are covering about 27 metres every second. Try and make minor adjustments or estimates in time to that level of resolution.

What does that have to do with being able to judge 4 inches?

You wouldn't know the gap either side of the car until you're inside the gap for a start.

So now it is possible for you to judge 4 inches at 60mph, so long as you're already in the gap? I thought that was impossible!

You could join up with Mr liberal beard and his mob.

Seriously it seems that you have a serious problem with knobs.
Unfortunatley knobs act like knobs and dressing up as a cop and pointing a hairdrier at them is more reason for them to do so.

Lobby the council for calming measures, there are other options than the dreaded sleeping policeman.
