New runabout suggestions

After some dozy girl pulled out in front of me at the weekend I think my trusty m reg diesel Golf with 231k on the clock is going to the big scrap heap in the sky. 
I got it for free 7 years ago with a view to using it to get to the station and back each day but I actually used it for more than that in the end as it just never wanted to give up, with virtually no money spent on it.
Now I need to replace it with something to use as a daily runabout. I will do a maximum of 3k a year in it, possibly less. It doesn't need to be in any way fun, just reliable, spacious and ideally comfortable.
I have found a few Mondeo Ghia X 2.5 V6 for around £1k which look in good condition from the photos, which seem like an absolute steal. The cars seem solid enough at that price as long as the clutch is fine. Are there any other particular issues with these, or other cars in this price range to be aware of?
