Second time this week i've done it. Never really bothered before.

I work nights and coming off a night shift makes it impossible to sleep normally on your days off, and im often still awake at 4am.

I've always been put off going for a bit of a hoon because my car drinks so much petrol, but im using a diesel at the moment so thought id go for a drive last week.

Done the same thing again tonight and its bloody great. I've done about 40 miles tonight. Went from my house, all through the back lanes, through the countryside, into the city, a little potter around the city centre then back down the motorway and home.

I wasnt even hammering it either, on the motorway i just sat the cruise at 65mph and made myself a little tired. Even on the back lanes, i was just making brisk but reasonable progress.

It's great. I've been hating driving recently, but thats because the roads are clogged, too many traffic lights, roadworks etc and mostly too many other idiot drivers. It was 15 miles tonight before i saw another car on the roads, and it just makes things 10x better.

I urge you to give it a go smile

Used to love night jobs as a courier for the same reasons. Have done a fair few Lake District and Scotland twisty bit overnights resulting in some fabulous drives, like you say not overly fast but smooth and flowing without bozos to interrupt!

You. My friend, are a legend.

I've just done exactly the same thing haha, I run functions as a job so often finish late at night too.

Driving at night is far better than during the day for endless reasons - even down to the fact that you can see another car's headlight beam before the actual car on a country lane etc.

Often go out late at night just for an hour or so, I'm sure we're not the only ones on here that do so!

I used to do the Cat & Fiddle at night, in the wet. Awesome. And not a copper in sight!

I love night hoons.
One of my most memorable drives was finishing work at Knockhill at 10pm, going for fish and chips in Dunfermile with the guys, then driving completely over the backroads to where my parents were on holiday in Perthshire. The roads were empty, nice moon and clear skies that gave good visibility and a great drive... even in a Pug 206 Diesel! The only issue I found was trying to avoid all the animals that come out at night hehe

Most of my most memorable drives have all been in the early hours of the morning, it really is so much better. Roof down and heaters on full, not a single other car about, it's just so much better than the same drive in the day where it seems for every mile of fun there'll be ten stuck behind traffic.

Yep, had it last night too. Dodged two rabbits at close range. Couple of foxes got out of the way before i got near and the night owl flew alongside for a few seconds before i got past him at speed. Was great biggrin

Late night hoons are awesome... but the knowledge that someone may not pass by for another three or four hours kind of tempers my desire to 'push on' if you know what I mean.

Already planning some spring trips. Wake at 4am and set off for the country roads to arrive by sunrise. Bone dry roads, no traffic, high visability cloud9

My sister passed her driving test on Friday, so last night we hopped in the car and went for a run around Surrey and Hants after dinner. Next to no traffic, a 120bhp hatchback and some nice, winding A-roads between Hindhead, Farnham and Alton. We're having fun, she's building her confidence, win/win!

Nah - summer mornings are where it's at. Still nobody around at 5am, but you can actually see where you're going.

Doesn't take too much organising to finish off at a nice café for breakfast too.

I quite often fly from Stansted at 6:30 and live near Banbury, the only consolation to leaving home at 3:00 is the 10 mile cross country run to Northampton in a hire car with a free fuel!!

I have done this a couple of times when i carn't sleep.
Even sticking to the speed limits it's nice not to be stuck behind traffic and just enjoy the drive.

Deliberately set off early one morning to visit my Dad. 100 miles in the dark/dawn on 'A' roads with hardly a soul on the road except me, my right foot and a 5 litre TVR for company. (also to go to the EVO triangle)

I struggle to find the correct single word to describe how good the experience was.

Ace time to travel. Will make a conscious effort to get up early this summer just to hoon.

Not as early a some of you guys but a couple of years ago on a London Tunnel Run we were blatting through the Rotherhithe tunnel about 7am and spotted a bloke walking on the pavement going the other way. A quick 180 at the roundabout and back through the tunnel followed by drawing up next to the bloke and slamming the loud pedal down received no effect; both on the V8's and the Speed 6's. About 20 of us tried this trick and he didn't even blink.

Drugs, gotta luv 'em biggrin

I've done it at night in the fog, that wasn't quite as much fun. Think I may have to spend a few summer nights up there this year when it's clear.

It's great! I do a lot of night work, and am out and about in my van in the early hours a fair bit.

An absolutely fabulous time to be driving. I find myself paying more attention to tunes being played on the radio too for some reason (the volume stays low during the day).

Everything seems to be better during the early hours. smile

ETA: and traffic lights go green for you on approach, plus there's never a queue. Lovely.

Serene? (With all its connotations).

I just like the fact you can actually bumble along at your own sweet speed, fast or slow, and not get tangled up with anyone.
