Infiniti Emerg-e images, er, emerge

Mid-engined sports car concept patent drawings leaked onto the net

Patent office images leaked to Italian blog site 'JokeForBlog' have partially revealed Infiniti's new mid-engined sports car concept, the Emerg-e.

The range-extender coupe, set for a public debut at the Geneva show in early March and which has been teased extensively over the past few weeks, will be Infiniti's first attempt at a mid-engined sports car and is a clear signal of intent that Nissan's luxury arm is serious about getting sportier.

Call us cynical, but it also does seem to be perfectly timed to coincide with the launch of the Honda NSX, the H-badged version of the Acura concept unveiled at the Detroit show.

As for further details, we'll have to wait - though no doubt all will be revealed before the Geneva show.

If these come from a patent application there's no "leak" as such - patent applications are published and available on the web. What's the number? If you have it, check espacenet for full details...

If it was a patent application, what's the patent for? You can't patent a whole car... it's already been done by Karl Benz in 1884.

In those renderings it looks like a 458 with an Evora tail and an Infiniti nose. It'll be interesting to see what it looks like in the metal.

What a ridiculous story. They are just renders there are loads of people able to do this sort of work. A lot of them kids doing designs for computer games etc.

Why would these be sent to a patent office? What are they try to patent here?

They're not images from a patent application. They're most probably representations from a Community Design Registration (i.e. an EU registered design).

Is it me or does the perspective on the front isometric view look weird?
And are the rear wheels bigger than the front?

"partially revealed" - I'd say it's more realistic than most glossy press release photos of cars!

Agreed, they look like it, however in the picture of the rear (to me) the front wheels look bigger...

Actually no, forget that. I just did some highly scientific dimensional analysis with my lighter, they're not.

The pictures look funny because they're rendered orthographically (without perspective), common in engineering and 3D in general. The best example being the wheels which are both literally the same size in the image but the sizes look all wrong to your brain as it is expecting an image with perspective like you see in the real world.

On the car, some aspects I really like, others I'm not sure about - like that grill; first of all I think Lexus will be a bit cross as they've just adopted an identical grill as their new corporate nose, secondly it's a horribly non-pleasing shape on both this and the new Lexuses and should be burned anyway!

I think this car (if real, if produced as is) will look either great or bad, depending on the colour, and the way light reflects off of it. I think in darker colours it will work better; blacks, navy blues, dark reds. I think in silver or the lighter greys the overstyled (in my opinion) creases. That said will reserve my judgement until I see it in the metal.

On the other hand, who cares? It will be another MR sports car, so its a win.

Looks a bit meh, but if it's basically a mid-engined GT-R then it could be interesting performance wise.

You can get design patents. (Not saying thats what these are from though)

For a case in point look at the tablet battles between Apple and Samsung.
