Given the amount of debates we have on here about standards of driving and how terrible people have become, I am interested to see how people perceive themselves in comparison to 'the average' Most people think they are better than average, especially on PH given the fact that we are all car enthusiasts but is there such a thing as a self confessed petrolhead who admits their skills are lacking. Given the fact that most people believe what they do to be correct, how many can actually admit that they need to brush up their skills. I personally believe I am a safe competent driver that is comfortable in almost all situations. However, I have never driven on a track and would probably be shown up by a lot of people so I can't class myself as an excellent driver! I put this out to PH.

Define "good". I'd like to believe I'm above average in terms of things like observation but then as I regularly break NSL and motorway speed limits (and some 40 and 50 limits) others would disagree.

Like people are going to give a genuine answer on a public forum. Most would have to admit to being at best, average... I'd say I'm an average driver. My awareness and ability to spot a numpty from a good few hundred yards means I have avoided any accidents so far (wood firmly touched(ohhh er)).

However, in a 'race driver/driving god' kind of way, I have never been the most confident when chucking a car through the corners and my technique would probably be exposed in a bad way on a track.

It's a statistical oddity that 80% of drivers think they are above average. . . . .

I'm good at some elements of driving and bad at others. Overall? I suppose I'm probably above average but to me that says more about how low the average standard is than how good my driving is.

I'm certainly not as good as I should be - I try to improve every time I drive.

It is, of course, perfectly possible for 80% of drivers to actually be above average, assuming that by average we mean "mean". If you have ten drivers of ability level "2" and two of ability level "1", then 80% of the drivers are above average.

This is a hard one. My ego insists I'm a driving god.

But I have L-plates.

I actually don't like the way I drive. I drive in London/M25 a lot during the commuter crush and have to use the black cab method of driving to get anywhere before I die of old age or go mad. I pride myself in being able to get across Central London quickly and without squashing anybody very much to spite a system that is designed to stop me making progress.

This means outside town my driving is overly aggressive, too fast and inconsiderate so I find myself having to make a special effort to drive "normally" I find driving in the countryside annoying often because people are indecisive, slow and generally more dim witted than what I am used to. Motorway driving annoys me because nobody seems to know what they're doing or which lane to be in so I react by being overly forcefull which is just bad as them really.

There, I admitted it.

Really? You think it odd that the majority of people who joined an car forum on the internet consider themselves to be better than average at using cars?

Also in every other driver survey ever the majority of drivers have rated themselves as above average, regardless of how true that was, so it would be odd if the answers weren't skewed.

Also also this: Dunning–Kruger effect. Bucket loads of it.

I said 'easily top 20%' because I've not crashed (on the road), I can race competitively at a reasonable level and my general driving, parking, observation etc is pretty good compared to many.
However I speed every time I drive any car and I fairly regularly make little inconsequential mistakes in my day to day driving.
I think my 'top 20%' judgement reflects the standard of most other road user's driving more than it does my own.
