Is it possible to transfer a number plate from a car with no mot? The reason I ask is that my grandad had a plate which has sentimental value to my dad. The car has been in the garage untouched for years and I have just discovered that none of the family have done anything about it. It's a rover 75 and last time I saw it it was not in that good condition so may cost a fortune to mot. Any info much appreciated.

Bear in mind that how a car "looks" has little relevance at MoT. Within reason, a car that "stops and steers" is well on the way to a pass, especially if it's an older one and not subject to all the latest detailed checks. I guess the sums work like this,

Sentimental value of plate + selling value of car with new MoT certificate = more than cost of getting MoT?

Daft question? Can I drive it presuming it starts to a pre booked mot? Thinking I can't tax it without an mot. So would I get done for no tax?

Technically it needs to go on a trailer AFAIK.

How much would it cost to trailor it 70 miles? Thinking get it back to mine and do the mot prep.

You can if you're scrapping the car, one of my mates has just done this so I'm not sure how to go about it but it certainly didn't get MOT'd.

It was my understanding, you can drive a car with not tax if it's to and from a pre-organised MOT. I've done it that last few years with my Mini and had no hassle. Not saying it's legal, but that was the advice from the MOT station.

You're allowed to drive to a pre-arranged MOT test with no tax or MOT.

But it must be insured, which is difficult without MOT or Tax.

Thinking the insurance will be covered by my policy?

I take it you mean covered by you, 'driving other cars' on your insurance? If so, the car you will be driving must be insured for you to use your insurance policy's 'driving other cars' if that makes sense.

Read your policy as that advice is likely incorrect.

yes

It seems a lot of people:

1) Assume they have DOC cover, when in fact they don't
2) Assume certain conditions related to the DOC cover (insurance, MOT etc)

It's not worth the risk - before you rely on it, read your insurance policy documents.

The other thing is the car has been parked for six years. I could just charge the battery and give it a go. Any advice as it's a diesel and I am a petrol lover? Keeping the plate to myself at the moment.
