Another what car thread. XK or Boxster
Discussion
I am planning on selling my celica 140 before the new one makes it look ancient, for around £3k. Im in no hurry and would have no problem letting it go for even £2k if neccessary, I want to put the cash from that and another £2k towards something a bit more classic sports/GT and convertable, the two that really stand out are the Porsche Boxster (70k miles cat D with teintop roof) or a Jag XK (100k miles FSH and apparently in good order).
I know the Boxster quite well but the Jag is a complete unknown, anybody any experience with them at this age/mileage/price range? Is it gonna kick my ass financially? Insurance isnt a problem. My OH expects cars that I choose to be unpractical and more expensive to run than most but if it breaks down often or throws up bills in the thousands I could find myself househunting. Also do the roofs/rear screens need attention at this age or should be be fine?
If its the porsche I would probably keep it for a very long time, if its the Jag I would like to scratch that itch and sell it on in about 2years.
Any advice guys?

£4k examples of both cars won't be great.
The Porsche will have a plastic rear screen that's prone to cracking, and at some point will need the rads replacing. I'm assuming it's not a 3.2S you're looking at?
The Jag will need to have had the later tensioners fitted and the gearbox fluid changed.
Otherwise they could both be perfectly reliable, or complete dogs. Unfortunately it's the risk you have to take when buying at the bottom of the market.

Not quite £4k budget hopin £5k or so.
I dont have an advert for the boxster as its not up for sale just yet, reason mileage is so low is because between being damaged and put back on the road it was SORN for 2years, that was 5years ago and Ive known it to be very reliable since my friend bought it. He bought it very cheap and repaired the bodywork with parts from scrappy and resprayed it, panel gaps etc look as good as any Ive seen with unblemished history, and as it didnt cost him that much he's not expecting that much back from it, around £4.5k.
Here's the XK http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...
I'll def bear in mind about the tensioners etc when viewing, was there a recall or anything or was it left to the owners to sort it out themselves?

That interior hasn't aged well. Still think that looks like a massive bill waiting to happen. Here's the XK http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...
Without wanting to fall foul of the N+S rules, I would avoid that Jag. That opinion is entirely based on the seller. I have been there before and their cars are dumped in a large concrete yard (and I mean dumped - a lot look like they've been parked by feel, by Ray Charles), the majority with flat tyres and green stuff growing on wings, window seals etc. You have to BUY a price list off them. They won't dig out a car for a test drive, only once you've handed over sheets to buy it. (How about a fresh MOT, service, etc? "No mate - sold as they are") When I asked them (in my official work capacity) to move their "for sale" vehicles off HA/DfT land (basically right on the verge of the A12, blocking an exit), out came the threats and the dogs on ropes.
Yeah the interior of the Jag will be gettin refreshed with a serious valet, lots of leather treatment, replaced gaitors, knobs and carbon covers for all that freakin walnut yuk.
Likewise with the Boxster, Ill be buying the Zeintop off him too and giving it a new set of headlights, and Ill feed my carbon interior addiction over time with it too.

God, thanks for that Bob, was the bottom of the price bracket convertable, Maybe worth paying a few quid more and going reputable route then. Bottom line then whats the worst case senario with the XK? leaking roof, HGF, gearbox failure, and not being able to sell it till its all sorted? When checking them out should I be looking for anything in particular on the car or is the risk only evidenced in the service history?

All of those, yes.Ideally you want to see that the tensioners have been changed (not a recall), the thermostat and water pump have been changed, the suspension has had new shocks and bushes, the gearbox fluid has been changed and that the throttle cable cable-tie fix has been done. I'm not sure if the XK suffered the same TB problems the XJ did - same engine, so i suspect it might have done.
Which Boxster are you thinking of - the 3.2 S? If so, parts prices are the same as 911 prices of the same vintage, so they're not cheap to run either.

I would be most concerened about the gearbox and electrics TBH. The engine itself is pretty sound as long as looked after as far as I am aware. At the end of the day you are talking about a £60K+ car when new, so expect similar running costs. I know it's not what you want to hear but any XK of that age in your price range will be more than capable of emptying your wallet/savings in the blink of an eye.
Some examples from a specialist (without fitting)
Hood lift pump - £2300
Exhaust - £1250
Starter Motor - £500
Alternator - £600
Service items and consumables are quite reasonable but if anything major goes wrong.....
if your budget stretched to £6500 (no less) i have a nice black 3.2s for sale, new clutch, rms seal done, intermediate shaft, fsh porsche new rear screen and new windscreen:-) 73,000 miles
or for £4,000 i have a very nice XJR . fsh jaguar
73,000 miles
both are black with black leather, and both great condition. im not a dealer but i have too many cars
the cars can be seen at this thread

Its a 1999 2.5 but the engine has been more than proven to be one of the good ones so not worried about early model niggles there other than the plastic rear screen, but as it'll only be fitted in the summer and hardtopped the rest of the year I can live with that.
Thats a fine stable Lester, but Ill be selling the celica first so wont be purchasing for a while yet, and I want back into a convertable, I can feel a good summer coming in my waters
Cheers for the input guys, Ill hopefully see you in member's cars lounge soon

Not driven the previous generation XK, but even the current lighter, more focused model is an unashamed tourer, while the Boxster is more or less an out and out sports car. Very different cars to drive.
Personally I'd go for the Boxster every time out of those two.
This, I drove the current gen XK when I had my Cayman. Despite the higher bhp in the Jag it felt fat and lazy in comparison to the Pork. Personally I'd go for the Boxster every time out of those two.
