Passed March 2004. Someone said anything under 500kg with a single axle?

I tend to not bother with any of that crap. I hook up the trailer and go. Only thing i do is make sure the car is rated to tow the trailer.

Stupid pointless rules annoy me.

My license says B, B1, fkp. So according to the above link I can tow a small sh*t caravan with my FSO Polonez. Awesome

I took the B+E test last month and passed first time, I'd been driving with a trailer beforehand for about 4 months and didn't have any problems but if you do get stopped you're insurance won't be valid as you don't hold the correct licence..

Hmm my guess is i get to go to court. I then get the privilege of having points put on my license because some moron bureaucrat thought it would be a great wheeze to come up with a bunch of pointless and stupid rules.

However i find it unlikely that i would get pulled so not too bothered.

Towing a trailer is as easy as breathing. Making lots of stupid rules is annoying.

Bloody fking hell. That hurt my brain. So can I tow a small caravan with my Polonez? Polonez = 1500kg small caravan for the sake of argument 750kg on a B cat license? Or tow a car trailor and Talbot Samba 1200kg combined?

To be honest, the rules are so simple, but written in such a complicated manor that most of the coppers don't even know what you are or aren't allowed to tow!

Every now and again, the VOSA lot will be camped outside a race circuit and stop all the towing drivers as they leave to check paperwork.

I did B+E - not hard, just bloody irritating to have to take a day off work for it.

You can tow an unbraked 750kg with anything (as long as it will legally tow 750kg unbraked). You can tow any other trailer over 3,500kg as long as the maximum gross weight of the car and trailer doesn't exceed 3,500kg.

I used to tow my boat (1,350kg) with my Audi S4 (2,150kg MAM) and it came to exactly 3,500kg, so was legal. However, it was ILLEGAL for me to tow the same boat with the Shogun as the Shogun MAM weight was too high, making the total train weight over 3,500kg. Pretty ridiculous really.

MAM is the maximum authorised weight of the car, so the maximum the car could weigh, fully loaded with people and luggage. MAM or MGW (maximum gross weight) of the trailer is the maximum weight the trailer can tow, including the trailer weight. So, even though the actual train weight of the Shogun and trailer with just me in it wasn't physically over 3,500kg, the fact it all could be, means its illegal! Crazy.

Yeah, it's not cheap. About £500 for a couple of days training, hire of the car and trailer and the test fee.

Hence why i pay little attention to the rules.I simply apply common sense.

I saw one earlier. But it was in Asda and the driver came out five minutes later with a carrier bag full to the top of fairy cakes. Looks like they'll be setting up a checkpoint soon!
