Defender 200TDi starter wiring
Discussion
Hi all
I'm in desperate need of some help. I have had some starter issues with my Defender, so I removed it and bought a recon one.
I have fitted the recon unit today and have got all the "fixing" bolts back in nicely. The starter has two "poles", one on the small solenoid and one on the main starter.
I have fitted the blade connector to the solenoid, and two wires also fitted to the solenoid (seem bent in such a way that they fit snugly). There is one large wire fitted to the back of the pole on the main starter. This runs down towards the chassis, is this likely to be the earth?
The problem is that there is one wire hanging around! it has a ring connector on the end of it, and the other end is attached to a nut on the engine block. It isnt long enough to reach the solenoid, and it appeared to run to the pole on the main starter body. I fitted it here, but when i threw the isolator the battery hissed, so I stopped!
So, wtf is it and where does it go?

The starter earths via the bellhousing
The big heavy wire comes from the battery via your isolator switch (which is full of mud and causing all your problems but you are ignoring me on this) and goes onto the big terminal on the small round thing and the other heavy wire is the feed coming in from the alternator which should go on the same post so it charges the battery.
Whoops read it again
The wire going from the engine to a wire connector is probably the missing earth lead which may also be causing hassle

You are on the right track
Spade connecter is the exciter 12v wire from ignition relay
The two larger wires connected to the solenoid are the direct 12v feed from the battery and then the other taking the 12 v feed to the fuse box in the engine compartment
In additon to these two wires on th same connector on the solenoid is usually a brown thinner wire leading to the alternator
The earthing cable from the rear of the starter motor can either be atteched dirctly to the chassis as an earth or to the bell housing as an earth or directly back to the negative terminal on the battery
My 300 tdi had issues with poor earthing and the direct earth from negative battery terminal to the earth on back of the starter motor cured that

Well. thanks for your help (thinfourth I am listening, I'd taken the bell housing wire off and emery-papered the terminal to no effect).
Sadly, I was just turning the nut on the solenoid to re-fit the wires as they should have been and the terminal snapped off! having removed it, it looks like a weak bit of plastic. The refurber is going to swap it, but no play for me this weekend.
Oh well, that's the way it goes I 'spose
