At least from the point of view of those of us who like M cars for their high-revving naturally aspirated nature;

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/9084130/A...

New RS4 = high revving, naturally aspirated V8, rear biased 4WD
New BMW M cars = low revving ,lots of mid range, turbo charged with fake engine noise piped through the stereo, much better in the "real world" etc etc

God there's an Audi on my shortlist. What ever next.

What if you don't want an estate? I'm sure that the new RS4 won't come as I saloon (although I ain't 100% sure).

The new M5 has a 'sound generator' which pipes fake V8 noise through the speakers.

RS4 looks nice (if it came as a saloon) but a pity it's not RWD

Why not? The last one did, but the estate has always sold better so they show that one first. Simples.

I dunno, I'm a big RWD fan (bore) but the RS4 is 80% rear-biased 4WD which sounds like the best of both worlds to me.

I'm sorry but I fail to see how any petrol head can get excited by a warmed through yesterday RS4 or a BMW so anodyne it plays its engine noise through its speakers. Slow, overpriced,marketing-led dustbins I'm afraid.

My Honda has a "sound generator", I generally use it to pipe Foo Fighters into the cabin.

The American's made a big fuss about this as the same system is used on the new 4cyl (Americans have always resisted 4cyl BMWs) Z4 28i so they would think it's a 6!

I'm sure I read somewhere that MINI diesels use it too.

the new M3s being tested at the ring (on utoob) sounded like wet farts with there blown engines so i can see speaker V8 sounds coming there way as well

That is rather tragic, surely they could find a way to make their cars sound good without using 'Max Power' tactics, wonder if they'll offer an electronic dump valve as an option laugh .

If companies like Maserati can make a turboed V8 sound absolutely pant wetting gorgeous, surely a company like what BMW could manage it?
