Seem to be able to pick these up for buttons, 1999-2002 models both manual and automatic 2.4 petrols.

Is there something horrendously expensive to fix with them etc or is it just the usual uneconomical car that nobody wants?

I don't think the S80 was ever received with quite the same acclaim the S60 won. I prefer the S60 overall, though the S80 is a nice full sized cruiser. They tend to be automatic though, and if I recall some posts from the smoker barge thread they have their own foibles. Should be good for comfy, cheap cruising though.

From what I heard the build quality on the early ones was not particularly good. Plus they are big cars, the 2.4 petrol with auto is not economical nor does it perform very well.

Personally I think the first generation S60 is the one to go for. It doesn't feel like as big a leap from the S70 as the S70 does from the 850, but it is a superb car. I'd take the Volvo over the German competition any day. The S60 T5 is a great bargain bruiser, you can get one for the price of a set of tyres on an M3 of the equivalent age yet I doubt there is much between them out on the road.

It stands to reason that the time I was most comprehensively spanked on the road was when I was passenger in a car that moved out of the way to let a police driver trainer S60 T5 overtake us on the A69...quickly shurgging off our 100mph and disappearing over the horizon!

Volvo S60's are great cars. Seriously under rated.

A T5 isn't going to happen sadly, insurance company says no.

(in fact they probably say "get the fk out of my office" hehe)

Was just curious about the S80 because they came up in my usual sweep of Autotrader < £1000. Going to be looking for something that's up to a bit of wafting because the econotoaster certainly isn't.

My father has a 2005 D5. Having experience of it I would say it is not for me. They are very good at cruising in a straight line. The steering and suspension get very wallowy when you show it a roundabout or a corner. Build quality is very average, hence they are cheap used.
