Surprised by a Hyundai i10

To say I was a little disappointed when my parents turned up at my place in new (well pre registered)Hyundai i10 was a bit of an understatement. I regarded these cars in the same way as you would a Skoda back in the day.
Well roll on a year and the old man has passed away and my Mum asked me to sell the car (sad bit done) so I drove it home on the motorway and have pottered about in it locally. I normally drive a D5 Volvo but have to say it has been a revelation!
The car is I guess still at the cheaper end of car manufacturing and the metal is probably somewhat thinner than on my Volvo but it's quite nice on the eye, has 5 doors, lots of extras thrown in like ipod connection, electric windows all round etc etc that you would pay a lot for in main stream manufacturers.
What was surprising to me was how keen the little 1.25 litre engine is. On the motorway I looked at the speedo and was surprised to see 8.5 leptons when i thought I was under 7 leptons and although definitely noisier than the Volvo it wasn't unbearable. Even with a carful of kids it was still accelerating well and the 5sp gearbox has quite a nice change to it.
Hyundai even offer a 5 year warranty on these car so seem to be quite confident in them. Only since driving one have I noticed how many of them there are around (as so many small cars look similar these days).
So as I said I am surprised - I appreciate lots of previously crap manufacturers have upped their game but just when did Hyundai get it so right?

I know exactly what your saying, I was the same when my parents brought an i30 which then lead on to my girlfriend buying an i10 and I am really impressed at what good cars they are. I would never buy one myself but they suit their needs perfectly and they are excellent value for money and 5 years warranty says alot about hyundais confidence in the cars they are selling.

- Hyundai i10 at the Ring - My grandad wants a new car with little outlay and running costs while having some toys.
When I was looking around with him, Hyundai was pretty hard to beat with its range of cars (i10, i20, i30). They really are quite good cars, and has more gadgets than (I at least) thought you could get at that price. He still has (yet) to make a decision but I think when he will, it will be Hyundai.
Reading that previous link is it no coincidence the i40 is european designed just along from Opel

Yep, have to agree. The indie I use to service the BMW uses Enterprise to provide a courtesy car so I've had an i10 a few times and it's a cracking little motor. Easily outclasses the crappy Corsa's they sometimes dump on me. The gf needs a car at somepoint, had been thinking along the lines of 107/C1 type but she does trek up to Leeds now and again so better motorway manners would be appreciated and I can't help but think we'll be looking at something Korean.

Was looking around for a replacement for my reliable AYGO--great city or mile eater.Looked at Hyundai i10 which seemed a bit small inside and also checked out the Kia Picanto--big difference in cabin space and seemed to ride better.7 year warranty and better deal clinched it.Both marques are on the rise--watch out now that design and quality are included.

That the new model Picanto? I'm so tempted to chop mine in for one when it's in for it's first service

Rob, will do motorway speeds all day *Edinburgh/Southampton in under 6 hours inc stops) but being short and high, it requires a bit of concentration in crosswinds.Cheers,
