A mate of mine has a BMW X5 3.0 diesel. We were talking about it today and got on to the conversation of converting it to a 4.8 petrol. So we wondered how much it would cost and if it would be much of a ball ake. Obviously it would be a new wiring harness and ecu etc, but would the v8 just go straight in?

Surely it'd be far easier and cheaper to just buy a 4.8 X5?

Just sell it and buy a petrol version. You would be insane to try and convert it.

you'd also need (i think) new fuel tanks etc which aren't that cheap, well over £500 new.

just buy a 4.8 V8 one and sell the 3.0 diesel one.

Sorry didn't explain.

He is chopping it in for a rr Vouge but it would obviously be far far easier to buy a 4.8, we were just wondering what work was involved and how easy/hard it would be if somebody was to take a job on like that.

Just blokes bored at work on a Saturday chatting cars.

friend's call to the insurer post pointless/ unsensible conversion said:
Friend: Hi, I'd like to insure my car.
Insurer: Certainly sir. Is it a standard UK model?
Friend: Erm, no. It's modified.
Insurer: <hand hovering over the "cancel call" button>
Friend: It has actually had an engine swap and...
Insurer: <click>
Friend: Herrow? frown

Huh?

So your friend wants to modify a car he is going to be "chopping in" for something else. That makes the mere thought of doing the swap all the more ludacris.

No no no!!! We were just chatting about his x5 and was wondering IF someone did do a conversion. Not that he wants to convert it.

Well that clears that up then smile

It probably isn't done easily enough to avoid having to go through great expense thereby making the proposal uneconomically viable.

His 3.0d X5 is like for like probably worth more than a V8 version!
