Following on from my last thread - another predictable what car thing, sorry about that chaps. I have a new query.

I am hoping some of you can make a recommendation for a good warranty provider for when I do take the plunge and buy.

This will be my first non-shed car, as I am getting too old, too fat and too lazy to repair my own car when it goes wrong, and this time around am buying something with all of the modern stuff that I've no clue about anyway.

So, are there any warranty companies out there who have been great, and on the other side, have there been any that have been terrible, from whom I should steer clear.

Gentlemen, its over to you...

Warranty companies take in more money than they pay out.

If it was me I would put some money aside and pay for repairs as and when needed.

I can't argue with this.

I was about to start a similar thread. I've just put a deposit down on a MK2 mx-5,(12 years old, 71k,FSH) picking it up on Saturday smile

It is covered for three months with the option of a further three years for £300 which to me seems like a bargain. Unfortunately if something is to good to be true then it usually is.

The warranty is with http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/quote_page1.html The dealer says they are really good(well he would do?)

One thing that did put me off a little was, if there is a fault I can take the car back to the dealer(about 35 miles) or any branch of Halfords.

Anybody used these before?

Some people prefer the certainty of, for example, £300 bill over a 1/5 chance of a £1000 bill smile

What more concerns me is the perceived attempts by companies to squirrel out of any warranty payours.

I've had to make a claim from Warranty Direct an while they did pay out the process requires you to pay the bill and they will send you a check. An example scenario that put me off is that for example a 2nd gear syncro goes in your gearbox. I would assume the dealer would just replace the box, but Warranty Direct require the garage to strip it down and leave it disassembled to then wait for up to a week for one of their engineers to attend to check the faulty part. Once they've checked it, they will only replace the faulty parts in the gearbox. If its not covered for some bizarre reason then you'll be picking up the entire cost including the labour for the strip down that Warranty Direct required to assess the damage....

As the guys have said above, I'd just budget for bills. At £350 a year for two years, that's a recon head and a head gasket.... (Obviously depending on the car!) smile

If I got a £1000 bill for a 12 year old MX5 I would junk it and buy another one.

AA Warranty,

Best thing for a used car. Dont like WD they offer everything (and do not pay out)

AA paid out both times perfectly and on time. No hassle, no inspections, £50 excess, £1500 of £1700 gearbox bill paid, and all of alternator bill paid.

They only pay £39 an hour, or go to their "approved garage"

Result.
