Only a thought having just spent a rather silly (for us) amount on a camper van BUT if you were to have a third car simply for fun but also had young kids and a dog would you go:

1) E39/E60 M5 - plenty of space, a boot, fairly comfortable. Vaguely practical.
2) An Evo IX FQ360 - I was very impressed when I tested one but they need servicing every 4 miles.
3) A Caterfield/Westerham - sod the family, I'm going fast on my own.
4) A sorted hot hatch -like a 182 Trophy or similar.

Current cars are a 335d Touring and a T5 California (smart van turned into a camper by VW) and NO plans to sell either!

What a car! Oil change every 6months is no big deal.

It's the current favourite TBH. I was soooo close to buying it but my sensible head kicked in.

I do need to scratch the V8 itch at some stage but maybe when back seats aren't needed.

Not the same but I had an R32 Golf for a year. Sort of similarish. Well a V6 hatch anyway!

I'm erring towards "slightly nutty fast" rather than "pretty fast"

I'm like a 12 year old in a playground in that respect.

It's not a "now" idea, just something I've been mulling over. Plus we've scored a load more work this week!

In that case - TVR Tamora. Cracking chassis, stunning engine, you can get a good one for under £15k.

For me, I'd be going for a classic- looks and involvement over performance- assuming you already have something performance oriented in your garage!

Not a huge fan of TVRs - I respect what they can do but they've never really done it for me. A mint Sagaris would be a possibility but big money.

M5 Tourer, ticks all the boxes.

Maybe more of a replacement for the 335d.

Id take a Caterham over almost anything for a car 'just for fun'.. I don't think you'd have as much fun in the others.

You better like the outside though..

I spend a rather unhealthy amount of time outside. I like it a lot.

Slightly nutty fast in a Caterham can mean quite a big outlay. 20/22k for a decent R300, 25 to 30k for an R400 and psycho numbers for R500 (avoiding early Ks) or CSR260.

It's worth it biggrin but it is a lot of outlay.

Since you've already got a BMW, and the Evo will need its air intake emptied every 50 yards, I would say get a Subaru Impreza WRX STI as the best compromise.

Are you really going to use if for fun with the Mrs, kids and dog on board? I'd suspect not really, if you all need to go somewhere take the 330d, if you're going out for fun surely you're more likely to be alone so get a two skater.

Would buy something thats done most/all of its depreciation then you arent worried about it losing value when you arent using it.
