E46 M3 under 60k or 1998-2002 911 60k?
Discussion
Good evening,
I am new to the board and for my first post would like to ask for some opinions.
A 911 is a car that I have loved for a good duration of my life, I am late 20's. Call it a bit of a dream car. I have an idea of roughly how much money I would like to spend (around the 10k mark)
I also very much love the E46 M3 and a good mate is persuading me on this also. I have had very good experiences with BMW as previously had a 530i before I moved to the UK.
Or, would like to hear if you have any other interesting ideas. And car must be manual!
I should also note, I really like cabs, I cant say I will be taking around a track every weekend, but I would like to just for fun take it around once in a while.
Sorry if this is a silly post that has been asked before.
Thank you.

I've got no direct experience sadly, but my gut feeling is that you're likely to get a much nicer M3 for £10k than 911.I am new to the board and for my first post would like to ask for some opinions.

Plus, the 911 in cabriolet shape doesn't quite work for me - a bit hunched. It looks like a dog going for a poo.
The general consensus is that cars that were designed as cabriolets are better than coupes that have had the roof chopped off so that might change things. Z3M maybe?

Welcome to PH
without bias, I'd recommend going for the M3. Purely because a Porsche at that price is going to want work doing to it (or is going to be one that's not been well looked after), whereas your budget will buy you a decent M3. I'm actually toying with the idea of selling my M3, if you're interested I don't mind driving it over to you for a looksee - send me a PM if you fancy it.
Back on topic, your budget would get you a well-kept E36 M3, or a respectable E46 (i.e. not in concourse condition, but certainly far from an abused example). If I were you, I'd weigh up your priorities and see if you want to take a gamble on a 911 at the "cheaper" end of the market, or get yourself an M3 with a recent service and once-over, even though the 911 is arguably the more desirable car.

Thank you for your offer but I am in Portsmouth area and that is quite far from Bristol. I think your exactly right, a 911 would be a big gamble. Decisions decisions.

^I'm in London occasionally, my Godson lives in Southampton so it's not an impossible trip. What does your heart say? If you're prepared to take a shot, then go with that! If you've wanted a 911, then don't compromise, as you'll always wish you got one and not enjoy what you bought instead.
My head would say M3.
But:

Lots of work done recently, easy to live with colours, very well specced.
and

Better colour, and engine replaced.

I am starting to think it might be a better idea to wait until a turbo 911 is on the cards with much lower mileage. Send me a pm and well chat on there about a meet. Cheers and thank you

True, but they just don't float my boat at all, and I'd struggle to pay a premium for a low mileage car if I was planning to add miles to it and kill some of the extra value it had. canadianchris said:
I'm not a fan of the Boxster really. And have heard them referred to hair dressers motors too much lol. I know they can be quite rapid.
Fair enough. Both the cars you are looking at have image problems in some peoples eyes, any Porsche makes you a winker and an M3 is a drug dealers car. I'd think a Boxster is more likely to be the "couldn't afford a real Porsche crowd...."Bullett said:

Drug dealers car? I do work for a pharmaceutical company so somewhat true
just kidding I know what you mean. I was more thinking about the "couldn't afford a real porshche thing" but didn't want to offend anyone. M3 cab is so far winning my views I think. There was a thread running on here some months back about buying a £10K 911, actually a 996. I don't think anybody did and most of the postings were about cars advertised @ 14K+. Personally, I've never seen or heard of a good 10K 911, well not in the past ten years and don't expect to see one now. I suspect if you do find one at that money it would be very wise to have another 5K for potential repairs/maintenance. As, mentioned by other posters here, look for an M3.
