I'm after a certain 2012 number plate. I'm not buying a brand new car, so was wondering if there is a way of getting the plate to put on retention until I want to use it and before it gets put on someone's eurobox.

I did a quick search but couldn't find any info.

Thanks.

Yes, just buy it through DVLA and keep it on retention.

I didn't think you could buy a new numberplate unless you bought a new car...

You can buy any numberplate you want if you have the money for it. Having a vehicle to put it on is optional.

Yep. Though it will cost you £25 a year to keep, and £80 to put onto a car.

Thank for replies.

Does anyone know if there is a way of reserving the plate before 1st march so that it doesnt just get randomly assigned to a new car?

Have a look on the dvla site, if the plate you want is for sale then follow the instructions.

You're a bit late. They were more or less available from Dec 1 to 31. (except the ones removed to go to auction). After 31 Dec only some are available but the DVLA will auction more desirable ones. You can contact the DVLA and request unissued ones be put in a future auction.
