Just did a 250mile trip in a Vauxhall Insignia CDTI. No idea what bhp or engine size but I thought it was going to be a pile of crap as soon as I saw it.

To my surprise, it was perfectly fine. Never once felt underpowered and rode very smoothly. It also had rain sensing wipers, auto lights, cruise control, parking sensors for what seemed a boggo spec car. Just didn't have leather or xenons.

While driving on the M1 where there now seems to be camera on every bridge, I was keeping up with Audi RS5s and BMW M3s etc because nobody could actually exceed the crappy speed limit. Then hitting the M25 we were all doing 50mph anyway.

Just got me thinking that although I like 'nice' cars, I can't actually do anything more with an expensive powerful car than with a rep mobile which is equally competent 90% of the time (for my kind of driving). The better thing about the rep mobile is they are cheap as chips so you feel more confident driving them properly because if they get dinged/scratched or whatever its not such a biggie. Of course I still got a nice car but I think next time I'll just go for a Mondeo and feel smug that I can do exactly the same as any exotic or powerful car 90% of the time for next to nothing money.

Absolutely. Get a boring but competent motor and something exciting for the weekend!
