I thought they were launched in March, correct me If I am wrong, of course. But today at work, there was a red BMW of some sort, possibly the new 1 Series, with the plate SY12 OZL, so that confused me, it doesn't appear on mycarcheck either..

It's probably running on trade plates.

One of my neighbours is an old chap, the kind of guy who drives the same (dull) car and upgrades to the new model every couple of years. He had a white, ultra-shiney Focus diesel with a 12 plate outside his house the other day, I thought he was upgrading but his 09 diesel Focus turned up on the drive a few days later. I suppose if he had put the money down there and then, he could have had a 12 plate early, nothing to get excited about really imo.

I think there is or there was some sort of rule where towards the end of a month a dealer can tax a car for a year plus x days. I remember my mum having a Golf like that it was something like a year plus 5 days (don't hold me on the 5 days though, might have been less).

I guess in theory the Focus could have been taxed well in advance of the 1st March and it's ended up with not quite a full years tax, assuming what I've said above still happens.

A car taxed in March needs a new disc at the end of February, unless it was registered in the last week, in which case, as said, the disc could be for a year and a week, expiring end March.

The 12 plates can't legally be on the road till 1 March, but it can be delivered on trade plates and parked off road.
