Hi, I've got a dilemma, and am wondering if any of you wonderful pistonheads can help me out. I have 5 months until i move out of my current flat, and will be in need of a vehicle. I fancy something fun, but cheap to insure and at least a tiny bit frugal.
Due to a rather blemished driving history even a Suzuki Ignis Sport would cost me a tad over £2000 to insure for the year, and that's about as far as i can stretch, give or take.
Any idea's or even amusing anecdotes about cheap fun cars would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
I have about £2000 to buy said vehicle aswell smile

Also, please don't suggest another T reg Corsa

My S3 Landy costs £80 / year to insure fully comp with off roading & mods. 20 minutes with a set of spanners makes it go topless....

Get a kit car!

Dirt cheap to insure! Especially if its old!

I paid £560 for my Jago Geep, and it costs me £280 a year!

loving the ideas guys, keep em coming smile
How much maintenance is the kitcar needing, i'm quite handy with a spanner as i'm doing engineering in uni, but it'd need to be able to handle around 60 miles a day 7 days a week? or does it all come down to how well i manage to build it?

Seat Ibiza GTI of 1993-1999 era, group 10 (on the old insurance system) for a 2.0l 16v 150hp 30mpg-45mpg engine in what is essentially a mk2 golf chassis with a polo back end making it barely over 1000kgs.

Got to be a classic or kit car hasn't it?

Mini, old Jeep/Landy, Locost, MGB blah blah blah

Get your spanners out but old stuff is generally light enough to be OK on fuel despite ancient tech.

2 grand to insure
2 grand to buy

4 grand total

3780 is into kitcar land

If paying monthly for insurance then the savings could go towards the monthly payment on a loan

With your budget and driving history I would suggest you stick with what you have got, keep saving and buy something better in a few years time once you have built up some no claims etc.

I know it's not what you want to hear but there you go.

If you're talking ultra cheap, low insurance, and amusing, the one car that always springs to mind for me would be a citroen 2CV. they're eccentric in so many ways, and utterly crap in the best possible way.

I drove one a few times as a student (a mate used to borrow his elderly aunts car and drive it like a lunatic, and let anyone else who asked drive it too). I don't think I've ever chuckled as much driving anything since. You can drive the wheels off one and still only be doing 30mph. Just search youtube for some ideas.

Following someone else driving one is almost as amusing. Just always bear in mind, that if you have smash in one, you'll probably end up like a tinned sardine!

ETA: if you;re a bit handy with the tools, you could always tune up the engine - I read a "build-thread" once years ago about a bunch of students who cobbled together some sort of turbo or supercharger system with some seriously home-brewed pipework from a washing machine IIRC and managed to almost half the 0-50 time (yes, there was no 0-60 time!)

Dam, was just going to say Ignis Sport, fits the bill perfectly.

What about a SportKa? or a Hyundai Getz Sport, pretty quick but probably not that fun i admit.

Sportkas tend to rust but any car in the world is better and more fun than a T reg Corsa, without question the worst car I've ever been forced to drive.

Small Fiats have a touch of "brio" to them and can give that "fizz" that even a Maclaren lacks wink

Last gen boxy Fiesta is a nice steer too, even in 1.4 guise.
