Right, I have 4 grand to possibly spend on a 3rd car (when the Astra is sold) I have thought of various things but would like to put it to the PH massive.

I'm 18 so cannot insure an ///M car how ever that isn't an issue as one possibility is to purchase an E36 M3 and build it as a track car etc....
500SEC is another option which has crossed my mind.

The car will probably see may be 3K miles PA so MPG etc not a problem, overall no real spec or criteria just want to see what you'd buy for 4K and see if that helps me hehe

So, what would you buy in this situation ?

So basically you want a random collection of cars that people could possibly buy for £4k. Okay, in no particular order:

  • Porsche 944
  • Mk3 Toyota MR2
  • A classic Mini with a few mods
  • Suzuki Ignis sport
  • A mint Clio 172 Cup
  • A good BMW E30 of some description
  • An old Land Rover and some off road kit
  • TVR S-Series
  • Can you get a decent RX8 for that, yet?
  • Maybe a high-mileage Honda S2000?
  • A nice Clio Williams
  • Good 106 Rallye
  • Obviously an MX5...

Pretty sure you can. Cue the usual RX8 responses.

No if you read it properly you'll notice the bit " what would YOU buy "....

A car a is a personal choice but would would you individuals be looking for ? A 500SEC is where I'm thinking but maybe someone else has got reason/driven/experienced a particular car that they would rec' or seek to purchase for 4K.

If you are asking what I, personally, in my circumstances would buy it'd be an MGBGT but that won't be much use on a track.

An E36 M3 track car will be a struggle for £4k but might be do-able if you are lucky. A 328 would only be, what, £2.5-3k after buying + tyres + brakes. Plenty to spend on track days and tuition and insurance is much less then an M3

For a road car I'd have a look at what XK8's you can get for £4k, look ok in the adverts.

An 840i is an amazing car, but even of 3K PA they look ruinous to run.... just talking Vixpy about his the otherday and that almost made me cry with the price that parts retail for yikes

4k would be the initial purchase price, I'd be looking at overall dropping 6-7K overall into an E36 M3 Track car (but may have share the car the costs would be halved)

A mint base car (just to annoy the purists) would need to be sourced and ripped apart to commence a project over the year.

Indeed, however just look at it - you could just trailer it to where you want to go then sit in it looking cool cool

Calm down dear. I was referring more to the fact you didn't give any criteria. If I bought a car for £4k that would rather depend whether I wanted a track slag or something to transport the dog around in now wouldn't it? hehe

But seems you asked nicely I'll pick a mk3 MR2.

£2,500,000 isn't bad for a first car hehe

I'd be looking at a cheap kit car, like a Westfield or getting a bike licence and a bike that wouldn't depreciate, like a 90's 600 Monster, Honda Bros 400 or something.

Not biased in the slightest but I'd be looking for an integrale 8v/16v in unmolested good condition. The values of pre-evo's seem to be on the rise.

Also nice E21 alpina BMW or 2002tii with split rims and lowered. (ed- Turbo arches)

That is an absolute beauty, however as much as I love these cars I always get a feeling in my head that they could be a very expensive thing to maintain and run!

Clio 172 cup is the performance bargain of the moment. You can easily get one for nearer £2k and spend the other £2k on track tyres, new brakes, new standard shocks all round with eibach springs. It's hard to find a better daily driver/track car for the money. Only downside is that after owning one for a little while you find yourself hooning it everywhere, you just can't help it, it becomes the norm! 42 mpg achievable too, win-win-win...
