I've just been to see my grandads car which has not been started for 7 years (Rover 600). The clutch pedal just goes loosely flat to the floor. Is this something to do with it being a hydraulic clutch and will it start working once i get the engine running. Everything else apart from the battery seems to be in surprisingly good condition. Guess i will find other things once i get it towed back to my place for a proper look.

All of the fluids and filters will need to be changed including the brake fluid. Sounds like the clutch has no hydraulic fluid or the system has seized.

If the clutch had seized it'd likely seize in the "up" position, making the pedal solid. So the chances are that it's not that. Check the fluid reservoir to see if there's any in there.

Sounds as though the fluid has leaked out - probably from the slave cylinder (the part that actuates the clutch itself).

If you top up the fluid reservoir with clean fluid and pump the pedal you should soon find out what's going on. It may well "pump up" enough to get things working without even being properly bled. (Bleeding is done by slackening the bleed screw on the slave cylinder and getting someone to pump the pedal while you keep the reservoir topped up. Close screw when you see clean fluid with no air bubbles.)

PS. Unlike the brakes, the engine has no interaction with clutch hydraulics. It's a self-contained system with very few parts. Master cylinder, fluid, pipe, slave cylinder.

Thanks all fluids looked ok for levels he had even written on the reservoirs when they were last changed along with the battery too. Problem is its in his garage. I managed to jack up one side and free one back wheel. Then rock it enough (couple of inches) so i could open the bonnet. Need to get it towed to my place so i can have a good look and change all the fluids.
