Cheap RX8's are trouble
Discussion
I know that, but couldnt help it. Just picked up this for £1100. 105k miles, no history, bought at auction. Gone halves with my brother for track days.
I know its gunna cost a packet but we are both handy with the spanners and cant wait to get it on track.
What should I be looking out for? It runs nice and smooth (for now

Yep, get a compression check ASAP and check the oil level and keep it topped. Other than that they are fine generally. Ignition packs need regular changing (about every 30k).
In the case of engine failure if you are good with spanners they are pretty simple to rebuild, being rotary and normal aspirated.
Lucky guy! Wish I still had mine!

People who don't own them talk a lot of crap about them. My wife bought a new one in 2004 and other than needing new coils, it's been trouble free in 45,000 miles. Our son bought a 54 plater that has now done 60,000 miles also no trouble other than needing a new coil. RX8s had a separate coil for each lead, and they tend to "go", so if you have a starting or rough running issue get the coils checked. They are dead easy to do but cost about £90 each. The stories about the rotor tips going are old wive's tales that started with the series 1 and series 2 RX7s, but Mazda had sorted that out with the series 3s and 4s. Our dealers have said that rotor wear is uncommon, usually because of poor maintenace and low oil levels. Oil is injected in to the engine to lubricate the rotor tips so it will use some oil and you must check it every 1,000 or 1,500 miles but in our experience the car only needs one top up between services.
The RX8 is well built, well equipped, fast (good for 150mph so son tells me - on the German Autobahns), comfortable and quiet. They are not economic, but what do you expect for a 240hp 150mph car? Our eldest son tried to get the wife to change hers for an Audi S3, but according to Mrs Torque the reviews reckon that the RX8 is the better of the 2 cars, so she's keeping it.

If rotor wear is a old wives tale, how come there are so many people who will attest to it happening to their car?Makes me cry to think I bought a MY56 one of these in 2010 for stupid money and now they're worth peanuts. Enjoyed mine, 192 was a bit gutless though and 2 up it wouldn't go anywhere quick. Sold it to a garage for again peanuts (although 3x what you paid surprisingly) and they still can't shift it. Dead stock.

Thats the apparent story behind this one, dealer took it in part ex and hasbt been able to shift it so threw it in the auction. I'm not sure I believe him, he would have had some sort of history if he was trying to sell it imo. His reserve was £1400, we told him £1100 is all we have and are happy to walk away. he took it after some persuasion though.IMO most cars are in the auction for a reason, if this was a straight up car it wouldnt be here. We bought with caution and will go over it with a fine tooth comb before tracking it.

Might be telling the truth actually, there is no market for these due to the poor fuel consumption, most people aren't willing to live with it using so much fuel.IMO most cars are in the auction for a reason, if this was a straight up car it wouldnt be here. Are these worth more as parts than as a whole car?
Not allways , but 1100 is a steal .I broke my old Astra gte valver back in the day , the wheels , dashboard and transducer , rear beam and brakes went like a shot.
I was left with a shell , glass and couldnt even get rid of the interior.....sadly kids got to it and jumped on the roof and made a proper mess.
Oh i miss g82pso.
