Has anybody found a site where inputting a vehicle registration will show the cost of the car tax?

DVLA Carcheck will do that.

Link Here

ETA: Click the "Vehicle Enquiry" button on the side and fill the boxes in. This is what it shows for mine as an example:

Date of Liability 01 07 2012
Date of First Registration 14 07 2011
Year of Manufacture 2011
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1598cc
CO2 Emissions 119g/Km
Fuel Type HEAVY OIL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour SILVER
Vehicle Type Approval M1
Vehicle Excise Duty rate for vehicle
6 Months Rate £0.00
12 Months Rate £30.00

6 months is free but 12 is £30? I take it that's something to do with the 1st year being free because of emissions?

no it's because the lower bands only have a 12 month option
