May have to go and get the wife a new car soon, so am looking for some suggestions:

It needs to be able to take 2 dogs (one a Great Dane X), children and perhaps a couple of bikes on the roof. She does not do a huge mileage, but running costs need to be sensible.

Budget of £10k max...

Current thoughts are:

- Nissan X-Trail
- Jaguar X-Type Estate (these look to be great value)
- Subaru Legacy Tourer (preferably a manual Spec B)

Any other suggestions, BMW 3/5 Touring would be ideal, but want to keep it below 60,000 miles (at time of purchase).

Cheers

Gotta be an MX5, should be perfect for the jobs described and you can borrow it when shes not using it!

This would be a sensible choice.

Passat Estate Tdi (170bhp).

Or a Volvo 760

Those two have very large boots for dogs, I spent many hours looking around at cars with a decent sized boot to put our Newfie in.

Passat Estate is a good shout, forgot all about those.

PS. Skoda Octavia is out (she is being a snob on the badge)...

V70, possibly in D5 flavour?

Parents have one, and it gave our Golden Retriever plenty of room in the boot due to the squarer back - most if not all of the other brands had sloping rears which reduced the amount of space she had to stand up in. I would imagine the same would be a consideration for a Great Dane even more so than with my Golden Retriever.

Cheers.

Navara is no good for her job, she has to visit clients as a Private Banking manager - cant really rock up in a pick up. Drove a CRV a couple of years back - hated it!

Nissan Pathfinder?

Slightly over budget and slightly over miles, but not as "blue collar" as the Navara pickup

Our answer to the same question was a 9-5 Aero for way less than 10K.

Honestly rethink the Octavia - was so impressed with the last one which we ran for 4 years/ 60k miles that we bought another one 9 months ago. Our firs one had 73.5k miles on when we got rid and 1 brake light bulb plus tyres is all that it ever required (was still on original brake pads!). Depreciation was £140 a month on a car we bought at 9 months old and part exchanged when we got rid of it. 50mpg all day long and very reasonable servicing etc.

We have an XF, Boxster and Octavia in our household - previously had 2x 6 cylinder BMWs, but the Skodas have been the most reliable cars we've ever owned.

Of your original 3 choices I'd be tempted by the Subaru (have never owned one however).

As good as the 9-3s are, I reckon they will be a bit on the small side for your requirements, I doubt you'll be able to get 2 dogs in there as one is a Great Dane X. I'd recommend the larger 9-5 estate, E Class estate or Accord estate, all of which have loads of space.

She is more Alfa - Italian (half anyway), looks great when polished up, but can be a bit tempermental!!!

I've got a very similar decision to make. We were looking at Merc C/E class too. Since noone else has suggested them, and I missing something?
