which one...? any ideas?

Looking to pay £4.5K to £5K for an 04 to 05 plate for a 1.6-1.8 petrol manual. I am guessing miles will be between 50K and 80K for that price.

Any preferred out of A3, 3 Series or Golf?

Thanks..Mark.

that does look good...but 3.0 is a lot more fuel and insurance than 1.8-2.0!

I would just go with the best example of whatever you can find.

If you are comparing a BMW 3 series with equivalent Golf/Audi then you would be looking at 316 (1.8L N42, 116bhp) or 318 (2.0L N42, 143bhp) variants.

A3/Golf are similar to each other, same engine in 1.6, 115bhp I think. They are belt driven so consider the cost of replacement every 4 years on Golf, or 5 on Audi (same engine oddly).

I dunno what the tax is on the beemer but A3/Golf 1.6 is £190 a year.

Anything but the Golf, IMO.
I would go for the BMW.

Dunno about BMWs but out of the A3 or Golf I'd have a Leon or Octavia depending how big a boot you want.

you could probably buy a very late Celica for that price with around that much mileage. good balance of power/economy. Plus a nicely sized boot.
Or a late mk1 octavia vRS with low miles. a

With that budget I'd opt for something pokey and diesel. The running costs will be similar to that of your listed choices but you'll have more power yes

Seat Leon Fr Tdi anyone?

But if you want a petrol as you don't do many miles, get the 330ci as the fuel costs don't matter as much smile

I like this man logic, either buy something powerful, or something powerful

(this advice may not be good)

How is it a chav car?
OEM (later model) alloys looks like the only modification?

BMW represents the best value for money, lots to choose from, better car for the same money as the A3 or Golf.

Secondhand the Audi and the VW are going to cost more to buy and run in this case.

At that price and petrol I would go A3 2.0 FSi.

I'm a 3 series fan but I just think the facelift A3 looks a bit sharper than the E46 and has a better interior. Not much between the engines IMO.

If you could go for the 325 or 330 I would have said 3 series.

Or else go diesel with a Golf GT TDi

just throwing a curved ball but seen a 1 Series.

mileage of 60-70K on a 50 - 55 plate for £4-£5K?

might be competition for my idea of an A3, Golf or 3 series.

Go for a Golf GT. Scrap the 1.6 - 1.8 requirement and get a 1.4 TSI, nippy and efficient. Will be much better equipped than a A3 or 1-series, and newer.

High mileage but this looks good value http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...
