My son purchased a 22,000 mile 2005 Mini Cooper S at the end of December 2011. At the end of January 2012 at about 24,000 miles it needed a new wheel bearing which the dealer arranged and paid for with no quibbles.

Last week the car stopped running. My son has taken it to the dealers mechanics (independent BMW workshop) who have diagnosed a faulty intake sensor. The bill will be circa £100.

The dealer has been very good throughout the sale and dealt with the first problem with no complaint. My son senses that he is distancing himself now from any further liability.

Can anyone advise what the dealers legal obligations are? This is not a case where anything is getting out of hand and my son is prepared to pay the bill. We would both like to know whether the dealer has any liability or not.

The car has now done 26,000 miles i.e. 4,000 since purchase two months ago.

Thanks

miniman

It's hardly an old banger - I would say that 2 months down the line the dealer ought to be sorting that out for you.

I wouldn't have thought so for that.
There comes a point where you have to look after your own maintenance. I can understand the wheel bearing, they take time to go, and it will have been "worn" when sold to a degree, but as for other stuff like sensors, it would appear it was in working condition when the car was sold.

How much did he pay? Did it comes with any warranty?

It is basically going to come down to what is reasonable, the car is 6-7 years old after all. Definitely not grounds to reject it but you might expect some contribution from the dealer if the part is a wear/tear item that was probably on its way out at the point of sale.....
