Porsche 911 GT1? Anyone know anything about them?
I've been trying to find out about them as I think they look stunning and it's a car that nobody ever seems to speak about. I'm guessing seeing as there are only 25 then probably nobody has ever seen one let alone driven one. I was just wondering are there any in the UK? Does anyone know what they would be worth?

It's really hard to find out much about the roadcars.
They made two of the original 993 variants. Porsche presumerably has one of them, this one?
And the other is in a garage in Bahrain amongst the likes of the McLaren F1, F40, F50, CLK-GTR, Veyron and others.
Here's a thread with pictures, it's a truly incredible collection.

The one you posted, they supposedly made 25 of, but I've seen mention of both 19 and 21 built. There's one for sale in Belgium, one in Japan and one in Singpore allegedly but as with all exotic car sites (Anamera, Jameslist, etc) you never know whether the sellers are real or fake. The majority are silver, a few are white and there are definitely a black one and a red one, oh and a light yellow one in Cannes/Monaco.
Finally they made 1 single road version of the 1998 Le Mans winner, truly one of the most stunning cars ever made (and pretty much my favourite race car as well)

There were at least two in the UK - a white one which sold through Talacrest which was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2004 (and is pictures above - it has the 993 lights), and a bronzy one (also pictured above) which was sold by Gregor Fisken and I think is now in the States. I don't think there are any in the UK at the moment, although there is a converted race-car which is road registered and was at Salon Prive a couple of years ago.

The 911 GT1 is the last car to win LM24 outright for Porsche, so you'd expect it to be talked about but then over the three generations it wasn't very successful at all.
It was introduced for 96 Le Mans and was on it's way to winning when relability failed it and it finished second. It won the last three races of the BPR GT series against the original McLaren F1 GTR/F40 GTE and so on and everyone kicked up a fuss because it was basically a racing car first and not a road car, they'd bent the rules for homologation.
The following year the FIA took over the series, screwed over the teams with turbo engines (Porsche especially), Mercedes went even further bending the homologation rules with the CLK-GTR and McLaren redesigned the F1 GTR to longtail spec so the Porsche was left fight for podiums at best. Again they were competitive at Le Mans but didn't win overall with the 97 spec car. Certainly the customer teams who bought the 96 version weren't best pleased with the lack of competitiveness, and neither were the bosses at Porsche.
They redesigned it to 98 spec the following year but Mercedes won all 10 FIA GT races with the CLK-LM and Porsche were humiliated. They won Le Mans that year with a 1-2 but pretty much only by virtue of being reliable. The CLK-LM and Toyota GT-One were much quicker over a lap but failed during the 24 hours.
So really, for three generations of a car, millions of pounds of investment and all the effort of the teams and drivers, it was a spectacular failure.
Shame though, because it's one of my all time favourite cars.

Regardless of it's relative lack of race wins
1. It's much better looking than the Merc
2. The F1 came from nowhere and blew everyone away
3. F40 LM and 512 LM epic cars were well beaten ad clearly a different era.
Value of these cars must be £700k ++ or whatever the owner asks for them so so rare
Prefer the 993 GT1 look over the 996 GT1.
Good shout on this usually it's F1 veyron lambo etc

It would be interesting to see what hey are worth, I would have guessed £500k+ but I wouldn't be surprised if they did sell fof £1 Million+
