Afternoon all...
Looking for new transport and have been offered a 04 plate V40 estate 1.8 with 75,000 miles by a friend of a friend.
I haven't even looked at them before but are they still the steadfastness of reliability and long life.
Seems a good deal at £3200?
What do you guys think?

A 1.8 might be a GDI (Mitsubishi engine) version, which is to be avoided due to coking up issues and the need to run on minimum 97RON fuel in an attempt to prevent this.
Other than that, V40s are a decent car but the price for this one is too high.
The fuel doesn't affect the coking thing as it's pumped straight into the cylinder rather than in the inlet. If it is a GDi I'd avoid it TBH! I had a 3.5 Pajero GDi and it's a PITA especially when the fuel filters need replacing!!Other than that, V40s are a decent car but the price for this one is too high.
Loved our V40. Not quick or involving to drive, but it was comfortable, solid and had bulletproof reliability. Excellent family workhorse on a budget, we had ours for seven years and it never once let us down. For the age of the design I think they look pretty good too. Make sure the 1.8 isn't the Mitsubishi GDI engine as they have a few problems. It's also getting to the age where the rear springs might be an issue.
£3200 isn't cheap though.

Is 04 plate the new shape or the original shape. If original, sounds expensive, if new shape, seems OK.
There is no new shape V40 until July this year, the replacement for the original V40 was the V50.Edited by mollymoo on Wednesday 29th February 21:39
