I think its great that the government are pushing for more economical cars.

The question is:

Where will they turn to for revenue if the masses turn to fuel efficient cars?

We're talking about a huge amount of revenue from the gas guzzlers. I personally see myself as a saviour of the British economic climate by running 3 cars, one saves the planet regularly returning 40+mpg, (for the green in me), and the other two are lucky to be in the low 20's which keep the public sector in jobs and the single mothers single and looked after. I also smoke, this also gives extra revenue for the health service.

This....if we all end up driving electric cars then duty will simply shift to that.

The same will happen with road tax

Either that or they will scrap RFL and fuel duty in place of a gps based road charging scheme, dunno which is worse tbh.

In many respects I think that will at least be funny so the smug wa****ers driving round in their "eco" wagons will then get their knickers twisted up!! And it would of course show that the tax is naff all to do with the environment put purely money.

Maybe every car will be fitted with a tracking device. Every mile you drive there'll be a standard fee.
I could see larger cities such as London, Cardiff, Edinburgh being hit with larger charges per mile.
Then there would be a ban on fossil fuel vehicles in certain areas. A fine if you leave that area.
Electric cars would come with an extra added insurance premium for battery replacement. This would be taxed heavily by the government as batteries are harmful to the environment.
And of course a standard road tax.

There must be some major beneficial reform plans going on behind the scenes or surely the government wouldn't by persuing this.
