Must say I'm totally blown away that in general there seems to be total apathy at the unbelievable price of fuel. Unleaded is at £139.9/ltr. Surely we can't all just carry on an lining the governments pockets on this basis. They really are treating road transport and motoring as a cash machine. That level of tax and Vat is scandalous. How on earth do they think they are going to generate economic growth with the simple cost of getting from A to B at such horrific levels. In reality the price of oil really has no relevance and the knock on effect is more and more cash out of your wallet each month. Anybody feel the same? Any ideas?

This is why i now drive a boring 1.3 ecobox. mad

The less money i pay to the government in Tax and VED the better i feel IMO.

It still costs me nearly £50 to fill that thing up too.

£112 for a tank of fuel is heartbraking. Unleaded is £1.33 round my way and i go through £50 a week mainly to get to work to earn £200 a week. 25% of my income is fuel in order to have an income lol so yes i feel the same. Gets worse considering the money I buy the fuel with has already been taxed.

Nope. I like it being dear, keeps people off the roads.

You can't tell me all these people on the motorway all day have actually got somewhere to go.

I really get the feeling that we are all being railroaded by the government into the eco car scenario based on the size of ones wallet.Company cars are a thing of the past and even being self employed and putting motoring expenses through one's company is now extremely difficult. Jesus they even seem hellbent on ruining the enjoyment us petrolheads get from wasting our money on cars, never mind ridiculous depreciation and huge bills at garages we all love so much.

Of course we all know that the UK contributes 4% of global emission and that there are already 81 Million cars in China. What we do in reality has absolutely no relevance to the the global emissions situation as a whole. Hey let's all just sit back and watch the government fleece us day in and day out and then watch them piss all the money away as usual.

P.s in the time it has taken me to write this another four new cars have hit the road in China !!!!!

I agree with this. They know we can't do without cars in this country so are exploiting us massively.

Yes we pay too much tax on fuel but as a country we waste so much money that we need to recover it from somewhere.

If they put fuel duty down they'd just tax us elsewhere.

I wouldn't mind paying so much tax on fuel if I could see that it was the means to an end, that UK was wasting less money on people with nothing to contribute to society and was reining in debt.

I won't drive less or get a more efficient car, I'll just work harder and employ one less person in my business to cover my increased costs.

The biggest problem is the general public grumble, groan, rant and rave then roll up to the nearest esso and fill up, me included, as we all have to get somewhere. Writing to your MP, raising a petition, GoSlow driveby never seem to make any difference, the bigwigs just carry on raising prices, knowing full well we all eventually give up and pay up.
Realistically is there anything we can do that will make the bigwigs take notice?

You can be sure they do read this.
This reminds me of the westiminister parking issue, everyone got involved and it got canned. All the objections that have ever taken place combined, were still in the minority and largely ignored.

That's one of the two reasons we have tax:
1 - Raise money
2 - Influence behaviour

yes

Hence why the 200SX went, the straight six BMW went. And the thirsty Alfa went.

45mpg out of a derv, 35-45mpg out of my £1k petrol mundano, and ZERO RFL ON THE CLASSIC that'll do 40mpg means I'm still paying for it, but getting further for the hit.

In some ways tax on petrol is better for powerfully built Directors. It applies equally to everybody, even the feckless jeremy kyle fans.

I think high fuel tax would be more easily justifiable if public transport was a high standard everywhere. However, outside of London public transport is cr@p. Even in London it is expensive and they cram people in like sardines, although at least it is regular as opposed to many vilages where you get one or two buses every week.

If you live in one town but all the jobs are in another 30miles down the road, how else are you supposed to get there for 8:30 every morning with a reasonable travel time? Car is the only sensible option for many, which is why the government taxes us to death on fuel/road tax/vat on cars/etc.

yes

around here public transport is crap. Town of 90k people, and as the majority are students, kids, OAPs and unemployed single mums..... The 10am-3pm bus services probably work fine.

None go to any of the industrial estates, town centre and the council estates are only places they go really. Other than that they're an "every 90minutes" affair.

Plus don't start until after most people are at work!

I am of the opinion that fuel duty should be scrapped altogether. If you look at the way VAT is going across Europe you can see that it will not be long before it is up to 25% here. The eco car argument does not wash with me. It was not long abo that the goverment was encoraging everyone to drive diesel....price was low etc and then look what happened. I have got to the stage in life that I do exactly the opposite of what the buggers say! Back to the scrapping of fuel duty, look what the duty game did to the whiskey industry, simply bled it dry, the same as they are bleeding the motorist dry.

Write to your MP. Tell them that unless their party will CUT fuel duty (not freeze it, but CUT it, and significantly) that you won't be voting for them.
