Factory fit tints?
Discussion
Just wondering on where I stand regarding the laws on window tints and my 2000 IS200.
The car has factory tints, which are pretty dark and obviously darker than what the law allows these days...
My mrs is soon to be driving the car as her daily, and was wondering if it was worth trying to pull the film off as I know the cops are pretty hot on this sort of thing these days...
Is it a case of it will be illegal even though it come from the factory like it?

You sure there filmed? Most factory fit tints aren't films but actual tinted glass.
If it is a film, I would take them off as even if they weren't illegal, plod will constantly stop you, plus its a pain to reverse anywhere at night.
Current laws are that the rear windows (b-pillar backwards) can be as dark as you like, and the front door windows can only be tinted 30%.

You reckon? I think that's a common misconception.
Yes I'm sure. I've had a lot of people bring there car to me asking for there window tints to be removed, only for me to tell them it's the glass that is tinted.Do you know something I don't?
I spend most my time reconditiong gearboxes (mainly automatics) but I also do detailing. While I used to fit window tints in england, I now only offer to remove them as lots of people here in ireland are converting there vans back into road cars, which is done by removing the opaque rear window tints that are the same colour as the car, and fitting seats and belts. Therefore, I also get a lot of people come to me asking to remove tints that a previous owner has fitted.
Do you wish to clarify why you think what I said was a misconception? Only reason I ask is that around 75% of the cars that I have worked on with factory tints are done via the glass, i.e not filmed. Citroen, Mercedes and VAG are just a few that spring to mind who choose not to use films when tinting the glass.

Just because I've had a number of friends who are eager to show off their new car which came with "tints from the factory" which they claim isn't tint film, but tinted glass. I dunno if the dealers are telling them this on purpose or if they too are misinformed sometimes (on used cars). But more often than not I've looked at the car and then pointed out to them the areas where the film goes OVER the heated glass element in the rear window - and they've been somewhat taken aback because they believed what they'd been told.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
