Newbie advice 911 nad Jag XK
Discussion
Hi all, first post here so treat me gently:
Having past the 40 mark it's time for the mid life crisis trade......kind of.
I am looking at buying a sports coupe and am thinking of a 911 (997 Carrera) or Jag XK (Maybe an XKR) as a second car for weekend driving.
I have 2 children 6 and 10 so need some rear seat space but given I'm the giant in the family at 5'6 AND A HALF....rear leg/head room doesn't have to be massive.
Looking for any advice the forum may have:
Running cost ex pertol and insurance (both 450-500 I think), the Porsche will be cheaper on road tax but what about servicing costs?
Depreciation, something that can't be avoided but say a 997 04/5 Carrera 2 vs an 07 XK.....what do you think holds up best ?
Anything else I need to factor in?
Thanks in advance

Well the new look XK is certianly cheaper to get into I think. Do you have a budget so I can look for some cars. In the mean time Ive done some shopping around and found these:
Porsche 911 (997) Carrera - 2005 - 32,000 miles - £26,495:

Jaguar XK - 2006 - 30,344 miles - £19,784. Whilst it's not the 420bhp XKR, it still has 300bhp (a bit under the 997), but is considerably cheaper than the 911 and is slightly newer

Jaguar XKR - 2006 - 24,000 miles - £24,995. What you asked for. Would say its better looking than the 911 especially in this colour combo. Plus it has 420bhp and is still cheaper than the 911.

Is this the right sort of age/mileage/price?
As for the rear space, it is pretty miniscule in both cars. Though I do recall as a 9yr old I managed to fit in a 996 Turbo pretty snuggly so your kids will be fine for now

The budget range is 18k to 24k...nice and wide.
I will be test driving an XK at the weekend, then will track down a 911 for a spin.
I would also consider a 996 hence the lower end of the budget.
Ultimately if there is a clear winner once I've driven a few the it should be an easy task BUT if it's marginal I'll keep to the lower end of the budget.

i would choose a 911 in an instant, i agree it may not be as pretty as the jag but as the driving standard goes, theres nothing better and a good one can be found within your budget, the advice i would give to you is to seriously consider the Porsche as you dont need leg room, they are incredibly comfortable and in my opinion better made.
good luck too you sir
good luck too you sir

I would add on to say that I think the XKR would keep its value better than the 911. 996's are going as much as £10k or so now depending on age/condition/mileage so more money will be lost on that. The Jag is more of a touring car than the sports car the 911 is. But both are good at touring/sporty driving
