Pic of the Week: Classic & Sports Car's 30th

To celebrate three decades of C&SC we're sharing some shots of cars of '82

Back in 1982, a little monthly magazine was created where people who enjoyed classic motors could read all about 'em. Three decades down the line and that magazine (Classic & Sports Car, if you hadn't worked it out) is still going strong. There's even a C&SC website, wonder of all modern wonders.

So to celebrate they've created their biggest-ever issue, which is so large you can either buy it and use it as a blunt instrument (not to be recommended), or spend plenty of time reading and enjoying it (far more advisable).

Among the features within is an article comparing and contrasting the cars that were new in 1982, whence these pics come. Now, of course, these cars make suitable subjects of study for a classic car magazine. But we also reckon there's plenty to suit PH tastes, so please enjoy the wallpaper-based modern classic loveliness.

And because we were too late to send a card (even via Moonpig) on this, the occasion of their big three-zero, let's make up for it. Altogether now:

"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Classic-&-and-Sports-Car, happy birthday to you...."

Full group shot
Traditional (4:3)
Computer widescreen (16:10)
TV widescreen (16:9)
Portrait (smartphone etc)

Ps - if you prefer your wallpapers with C&SC logos on it, please visit the Classic & Sports Car website for a different version of the DeLorean image

The first car to grab my attention in the photo was the BMW E12 M535i.

PH should get together for some sort of remake or homage to that picture.

A310 I think, GTA came out around '85/'86. Love all the Alpines though, great cars - would love to have an A610 in the garage!

I think at that age it'll be the A310. The GTA was later, and the A610 after that

Anyhow, great shot. And can I be the first to start the "what, no....." thread divert with the V8 Vantage:

I could 'give or take' the Alpine and the DMC, but a big YES to all the others!

Best looking car there by a mile is the Esprit. Tragic that the manufacturers around it in the pic have gone on to be hugely successful and Lotus has withered on the vine. Wasted talent IMO.

I saw the picture and had, I'll admit, a slight accident..... stuff of boyhood dreams (you know the kind I mean...)

My dad's just given me all his old issues (from issue 1 to... well, I'll tell you in about 2 weeks when I'm finished going though them) as they're downsizing and my mum's made him clear the loft.

My wife's over the moon we've got a bit of extra 'insulation' in our loft now and I keep popping up to bring down another bundle of old magazines.

I'm just imagining the selection of cars we'd have today, transposing that picture to the modern era.

There'd be a Ferrari F149 California (IMO - the 308 was always the 'accessible' Ferrari-for-the-people, which seems to be more what the California's about. I know the 458 Italia is a middie V8 but its displacement and demeanour are more Testarossa in my eyes), a Lotus Evora S, a Porsche 991, perhaps an Audi A1 Quattro (I'm not sure the A5 is anything like the urquattro in spirit), a Jaguar XK, a BMW M5 twin-turbo, a Bentley Mulsanne and the most hardcore of the RenaultSport Megane Coupes.

In place of the DeLorean, it'd have to be something British, using components and expertise taken from all over the place. Although its an infinitely superior car in every way and its equivalent back in 1982 would have been too, I'll plump for the Noble M600. I mean, both had engines used in Volvos!

I reckon the Audi TTRS more than the A1 to be honest. Closest thing they have to the spirit of the UR at the moment.
