Sold a car a few months ago which now needs taxing. I received a reminder, which I suspect means that the V5 has got lost in the system. Now I think about it I don't recall seeing any acknowledgement for the V5 from DVLA.

New car owner has called me to say he has applied for the V5 and I need to reply to a letter received very recently confirming that it's sold which I was going to do anyway.

Assuming I can find the tax reminder, could the new owner use this to tax the car at Post Office? It would have his name and address on the Ins. Cert, but would confirm that the MOT is valid etc.

Any ideas?

If he still has the V5 he can use the green slip to tax it.

If not I'm sure there is some form available online to do it. I think its an application for a new V5, which also allows you to tax the vehicle at the same time.

He's had it more than 2 months so can't green slip it.

He can't tax with application for V5 unless no keeper on their system already. I've faxed them today, but god knows how long that would take.

He's been in to the DVLA office and is currently stuck with car off road until DVLA update system, unless has can use my reminder.

If you are on good terms with him, you could pop into the DVLA office, pay for a new v5 and tax it then and there. I did it the other week (then found the offending v5 a day later). You can then sign the new one over to him, and give the nice lady the paperwork.

You can use the green slip for upto 13 months to tax the vehicle when used in a DVLA office.
